How do we install the agitator and keep it in place? It keeps coming up and in the process destroys the softener cup.

    WHDSR315D0WW GE Toploader

  • stella10433 Sep 17, 2010

The washer is a GE Top loader (naturally) WHDSR315D0WW. I think it has to do with the "teeth" on the bottom of the agitator lining up with the hub. Do we put it down next to the "keepers" on the hub and then twist to connect under the "keepers" on the hub or push it straight down? It doesn't go all the way down (probably due to the "keepers") so doesn't lock in. I apreciate your help!

The agitator slides in place. There is a clip that goes on the top under the cap on top.

  • Lift off the cap on top of the washing machine's agitator that is used for the fabric softener. If it doesn't easily lift off you may have to pry it off with a screwdriver. Be careful not to stab yourself in the hand while you're prying the cap off.
  • 3 Unscrew the screw that is underneath the fabric softener cap. This should easily be accomplished by using a screwdriver or wrench, depending on what's installed on the top of the agitator.
  • 4 Remove the old agitator by slipping a long thick rope underneath one side of the bottom of the agitator and over a broom handle. Continue slipping the rope underneath the opposite side of the agitator and over the broom handle again. Pull on the rope and broom handle with a bit of force until the agitator pops free from the base of the washing machine's tub.
  • 5 Replace the old agitator with a new one. The new one should snap in place where the old one was fitted on in the inside of the tub. Screw the screw in place on top of the agitator and replace the fabric softener cap. Your new agitator is now installed and ready to be put into action.

Not mentioned the make/model of set so I assume that the fittings are loose and come out from the assembly.
If you meant the tub then the bearings may be defective and must be changed. You will need to remove the assembly check for wearing of the shaft . If so get help from a machine tool shop to set this tight.
Now set the whole assembly back check on the belts for losseness , replace if bad.

HOW DO i REMOVE THE AGITATOR FROM maYTAG WASHER MODEL # MAV6457AWW

Gently remove the fabric softener cup off of the top of the agitator
Using a ratchet, an extension and socket; then remove the retaining bolt under the fabric softener cup.
The agitator will lift off after the bolt is removed.

    Installation is:
Drop the agitator in place. Install bolt.... tighten bolt with ratchet, extension and socket. Install the fabric softener cup.

Diplomat ADP 8322 - 11 Flashes. Will not go beyond the Rinse cycle.

    Hello,

There's never a good time for the washer to stop working correctly. If a washing machine's agitator isn't working properly, your clothes won't come clean.

The back-and-forth movement of the agitator is a main function in the cleaning process of your laundry.

If your agitator isn't working, it could be the agitator itself or broken splines in the assembly beneath the agitator. Either one is a relatively easy and inexpensive repair that you should be able to do yourself.

Instructions and material needed :Socket wrench,Rope,Broom,Replacement parts

    1. Inspect the agitator for breaks. If the agitator is broken or cracked, you'll need to replace it. A broken agitator won't operate correctly, if at all. If the agitator looks fine but isn't moving, you'll need to inspect the plastic splines in the agitator assembly located underneath the agitator.
    2. Remove the agitator from the washing machine by first removing the fabric softener dispenser cap on top of it. This cap should either pull or screw off. It it's difficult to remove, you might have to pry it off.
    3. Unscrew the bolt beneath the softener cap with a socket wrench. Once you've removed the screw, try lifting the agitator out of the washer. If it doesn't easily lift out, loop a rope underneath one side of the agitator and over a broom handle. Continue looping the rope under the other side of the agitator and back over the broom. Using caution not to hit yourself in the head, pull up on the broom until the agitator comes loose.
    4. Replace the broken agitator with a new one. Snap the new one in place and secure the bolt underneath the fabric softener cap. Place the cap back on the agitator and you're ready to start washing.
    5. fix-washing-machine-agitator-1.5-120x120.jpg
Check the plastic splines in the assembly directly underneath the agitator, if the agitator itself isn't broken. If the plastic splines are broken or worn down, this will keep the agitator from properly moving. In fact, it might not move at all. Replace the spline assembly with a new one and reassemble the agitator by reversing your steps to remove it.
Good luck and thanks for using fixya.

I have a model mavt546eww how does agitator come off.

Click the link to see a picture diagram. The softener cup on top of the agitator pulls off. It may not come out very easily but it will pull straight up towards you and come out. Look down into the agitator and there is a bolt connecting the agitator to the transmission shaft. Remove this bolt and pull the agitator straight up and out and you have it off. On the diagram number 15 is the softener dispenser, 16 and 17 are the agitator assembly.
    Thank you

The fabric softener drawer keeps clogging what can i doit aslo gets mouldy and won't drain

    Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Check down the edge of the door seal, see if there is a lot of "gunk" there, this would cause grey marks on laundry. If it is a front load washer then try these steps--

You'll have to do a few maintenance washes to clear it out of the tub. Try these steps to remove the dirt, debris and odor from the washer—

    1. Set your machine to 60 degree wash.
    2. Now add 1/2 a cup of Washing Soda or 4 cups of baking soda Crystals and run the machine with no clothes in it.
    3. Your drain will sparkle, and it will remove all the debris, lint & mold growth from the drain pump and drain filter. Also the mold from the door seal will be cleared
    4. Add 1 desert spoonful of Washing Soda to every wash... I sprinkle it along the crease in the door seal.
    5. Clean the fabric softener cup with a rag first, (bleach will not break up fabric softener as it is introduced in the rinse cycle with the fabric softener.
    6. Also check the drain hose, it should not be clogged.
This will clean your machine and get rid of the odor.
And, if it’s a top load washer then try these steps—

Remove the dispenser and spray with white vinegar. Then spray the agitator with it too. You can pretty much wipe it right out. Vinegar dissolves softener very quickly. The dispenser just wash out with warm water after the vinegar sits on it for a minute, and you hardly have to wipe at it at all. try adding bleach to the dispenser and clean it with a small brush.

The dispenser will pull off from the agitator and you can run hot water in it from the sink. The agitator is not as easy but has a 1/2" bolt holding it to the shaft. Remove the bolt and pull up. But you can clean the whole washer with a cup of bleach and that will also clean the agitator. Now run a full tub of hot water and then add a cup of bleach with no soap. After the washer has filled up, then add another gallon of hot water and that will help to rinse out the residues that cause odors. Then after that don’t use too much soap and you wont have residue build up. Only use the smallest amount of soap that the cup has marked in it.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

Cant remove agitator. Fabric softener cap is off but i do not see a screw or bolt to remove the assembly. agitator is only weakly working

There should be a 7/16 bolt in the bottom of the cup once you have taken the cup out. Its kinda deep you would need a longer extension. Also this agitator bolt usually has a gasket material attached to it and it may be covered by another cap.

    Gunk in middle of agitator

the fabric softener spins out of the cup after the wash cycle when spinning the water out of clothes, then the washer fills back up for the rinse w/ your softener having been dispensed. is there a nut at the bottom of your agitator where you see the gunk? If so you can take the agitator out by removing the nut but be careful of the little parts that make the agitator agitate. Do not disturb these little parts if you don't know about them. Does the gunk smell like grease or a mechanics garage? If so chances are it is a lubricant and should not be removed replace the cap and your softener cup and continue enjoying your machine.

I've got the same problem. The diagram is a bit deceiving because it appears to show the agitator/auger as one piece. However, the bolt only holds the agitator (lower portion) and then the auger slips in place over that. The fabric softener cup then snaps to the top of the auger.

Best I can tell is that the slotted 'ears' on top of the agitator are worn thus preventing a secure fit between the agitator and auger. I just finished putting some hard thumb pressure on each of the ears and bent them outward some. The auger fits much tighter now and I'm doing a test run of clothes. It is holding but I will probably have to replace what they describe as the agitator / auger assembly, costs $53.54. I don't see any other fix but would appreciate further input.

    Thanks
