What is the make and model of the serger? You could go to the company web site and go into the customer service page. You should have choices to either e-mail your request(include the make and model #'s) or call a toll free phone #. Possibly you could download the instructions or and owners manual

Your machine is either not threaded correctly, or the individual threads have not been threaded in order. Be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the machine. You must follow the instructions exactly or the machine will most likely never work properly. Can you at least get a training class on your machine? A class is indispensable, especially when it comes to using a serger.

Even if it is not the same model, these instructions may be helpful.

Instructions on changing thread tensions on a Mylock134

Probably the best thing would be to consult the owner's manual.

BEFORE you thread the serger, RAISE the presser foot so the threads will seat properly and the thread will slide easily. Be sure to thread each thread in the proper ORDER! (Usually upper looper is first, lower looper second and the thread tail should always end up laying OVER the top of the upper looper before passing under the presser foot.)

It is also helpful to use different colors of thread so it is easier to tell which thread's tension needs adjustment.

Sergers require varying tension settings depending on the type of stitch and the appearance you prefer. To achieve the standard stitch setting on most sergers, start out with all the thread tension settings at the midway mark between the high and low numbers. Then test and adjust from there.

Verify with the owner's manual that you are threading everything correctly and not missing any steps. If any thread happens to break or come unthreaded, it is usually best to unthread EVERYTHING and start over from the beginning. (Sergers are very finicky, so if you are frustrated trying to get things to work, the last thing you will usually try is unthreading and rethreading from the beginning.)

When we thread the serger . the thread is still skipping

Are you using the corfect serger system needles in it? Most domestic sergers will take the regular domestic needle 130/705X but work best with a serger needle with has a groove down the front as well as the regular back scarf. This helps with the thread pickup from the looper by the needles. Sergers also run much faster than domestic sewing machines so the tolerances are very fine.

My Bernina came with ELX705 needles and it does run better with these in it. Also you need to use mid size needles, don't go too small, probably a size 80 or 90 is best.

Check out this page for some good info as the different serger manufacturers do have their own recommended needle sometimes. http://sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page78.html

Always refer to your manual (or ring the manufacturer if lost) to double check what needle they recommend be used in your serger, it does make a difference.

My serger will only sew a few inches, then the thread on the lower looper breaks. I have checked threading, rethreaded many times.

Been there, done that. Old serger almost went out the window more than once.

Raise the thread antenna and loopers to their highest positions.

Set the tensions to zero. If your serger has auto-tension, raise the presser foot as this also opens the tensions.

Begin threading from the right as indicated in your manual or on the door of the serger.

If this continues, the serger may need to be serviced as the timing could be the problem.

Ask before leaving the serger as the service cost usually starts around $100.

I finally gave in and bought a Babylock with instant jet-air threading.

I dont know how to thread this serger. i dont

Have you opened the front of the serger to see if there is a threading guide.

Basically:

Lift the thread antenna to it's highest position.

Lift the presser foot and set the tensions to zero.

Turn the handwheel so the loopers are at their highest point.

Begin with the upper looper (first thread cone on the right/ end of looper is pointing toward the presser foot). .

Second spool is for the lower looper (end of looper is pointing away from the presser foot).

Third spool, right needle; fourth spool, left needle.

Be careful that the threads do not cross during the threading of the loopers.Follow all the guides, taking the thread under the presser foot and to the left side of the serger.

Set the tensions back to 3 - 6 and lower the presser foot. Sew a few inches and if the threads knit into a chain, you can then do a test sew with fabric.

Simplicity's Simply The Best Sewing Book has good information with regard to using a serger that you may find beneficial.

The order in which to thread the serger

Your serger should be color coded for threading. Just do one at a time either left to right or right to left with the cones. And you should be all set.
