No fear. sorry to say that your usb flash is done for. extracting the information can be done, but it is a specialized job and thus will cost a small fortune. getting it repaired is fairly simple but the information inside might not be attainable due memory chip damage. does your fash disk power up (as in does the light on it flash when plugged unto the USB port)?

babyvalkyrie. your problem is slightly different. what you need to do is log onto the bios menu during startup if the bios recognises the the HDD then you can try to re-install windows on it, but during setup you will have to formatt your harddrive fully (formatt using the long formatt not the quick formatt. also use the ntfs formatt. If your bios does not recognise your HDD then you will just have to replace it.

I have a sandisk cruzer micro 512 MB. how do i back up my files to it? thx.

Assuming you use a PC not a Mac and by files you mean things like documents on your computer or emails in MS Outlook.

Connect USB to Computer using a USB Port.

For documents:
  1. Highlight all the files that you want to back up (Holding Ctrl and Clicking)
(NOTE: MAX of about 500MB in total size)
  2. Press Ctrl and C (or Right Click on a selected file and choose Copy)
  3. Click Start
  4. Click My Computer
  5. Find the USB Drive (usually the E: drive or higher (eg. F:, G:, H:, etc.)) and double click it's icon.
  6. Press Ctrl and V (or Right Click in white area and choose Paste)
  7. Selected Files will appear on USB Drive
  8. Repeat

For Email:
Find the Drive's Name in My Computer (Click Start --> My Computer --> Find Drive (usually e:))

If you want to back up only some of your Outlook data, you can create a new backup .pst file of only the data that you want to save. This is also known as exporting .pst file data. For example, you might want to use this section if you have important information in only some folders and you have other, less important items in much larger folders. You can export only the important folders or contacts and omit folders like Sent Mail.

Follow these steps to export a specific folder:
  1. Open Outlook.
  2. On the File menu, click Import And Export. If the menu item is not available, hover your pointer over the chevrons at the bottom of the menu, and then click Import and Export.
  3. Click Export To File, and then click Next.
  4. Click Personal Folder File (.pst) , and then click Next.
  5. Click the folder that you want to export the .pst file to, and then click Next.
  6. Click Browse, and then select the location where you want the new .pst file to be saved.
  7. In the File Name box, , type the name that you want to use for the new .pst file, and then click OK.
  8. Click Finish.

Files should now be backed up to USB

Drive does not show up on my computer. How do i see the drive. It is plugged into power and to a usb port

Hello,

Is the drive already formatted? Or does it contain files already? Most probably, you just need to assign a drive letter to your usb drive.

If you are using Windows, right click on My Computer and then click Manage. Under Storage, click Disk Management. Locate your USB drive ( you can identify if its your drive by checking on the properties. Just right click on the drive and click Properties.

To change or assign a drive letter, right click on your USB drive and then choose Change Drive letter and Paths. You have the option to Add, Change.

I found this on this site. in case you havent seen it. It worked for me. Try this:

When I disconnected my backup drive and plugged in a USB drive the other night, my Windows drive letters got all wonky. D: became G: became F: became H:, and a bunch of my shortcuts didn't work anymore.
But it's easy to reassign the drive letters of your choice to add-on disks in Windows. Microsoft says you should log on as an administrator, and from Administrative Tools in Control Panel:
Double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Of course things can get wacky if the disk is in use - by your computer or another on the network - so proceed with caution, you drive alphabetizer, you.

All of a sudden my computer dosent recognise the USB Drive ( PQI - U230 )

at this point i would take the usb drive apart, you should see a regular hard drive in it. if so just set your jumper settings and insert it to your computer. if you still got problems then your drive has crashes on you. you can try at this point some hard drive recovery tools found across the net.
if the drive is too small to plug in then you need to get an adapter usually found at ebay. if this is a pen drive then i would take it out of the case then look for and solder the usb connector as this is the first bad spot to go. anyways, if its a hard drive and works in computer, i would check power supply goin to the use drive, if its good then i would contact the company that made it maybe they will replace the unit. or just buy another one. copy info back over to the new drive. or get a drive just like it and swap them out.
good luck.
