Ok a basic description. my xbox360 is connected to a netgear router, which is connected to the internet and to my pc. and i had a admin friend of mine connect it all up and configure it all out and it was all running nicely, i could watch video's play music, look at my pictures on the xbox while the pictures, videos, and music was on my pc. but for some reason i cannot do that anymore. i tryed to fix the problem for the last 2 days. i test the connection, and it passes connection to the router, it passes the i.p adres verification but it cannot find my computer and it fails. can someone please help me?!
i had already checked the media player to see if it was enabled, and sure enough it was, i looked to see if it was my router that might be the cause and it wasn't and two days ago it just kind of started working fine again... i really would have loved to know what caused the stuff up in the first place, but i suppose thats technology for ya. no matter how much you think its good in terms of advancement it still is fragile enough to break down because of one or two probably very simple things. thanks for the help guys

I have a similiar problem. I have a 2wire wireless router from at&t, and I'm trying to connect to my computer. it recognizes all my music movies and photos, but it can't seem to play or show them. I tried opening the router through internet explorer and opened all the ports (i think), but it still doesn't work. it's like they see each other, and see all the content, but i get them to play together! I also have a directv box that has the same issue which leads me to beleive that it is the router and some type of firewall somewhere? Can somebody who is knowledgeable in this area help me??!?!?!?!?!? THANK YOU!I have a similiar problem. If this is the first time you have connected your Xbox 360 to Xbox Live, you will probably be prompted to apply an update. If there are no updates, the Xbox Live Connection page shows that you're connected to Xbox Live. Press the Y button on your controller to continue.
If testing the Xbox it says DNS failed, then update your NETGEAR router firmware:
From your computer, open an Internet Browser and navigate to http://kb.netgear.com to download the firmware for your router.
Log in to your NETGEAR router by browsing to http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com. Enter the username (admin) and password. By default, the password is password or 1234 unless it has already been changed.
Click Router Upgrade on the top left pane under Maintenance, browse for the firmware downloaded and click Upload.
I assume the wireless router is configured correctly and the PC can connect to the wireless router and the Internet.
The problem could be that the signal is too weak upstairs for the XBox especially if you have a concrete floor between the XBox and the wireless router. Try moving the wireless router around to increase signal strength to the CBox.
The other problem could be the XBox is not configured correctly.
Follow these instructions to configure the XBox.
In the Xbox Dashboard, go to My Xbox and open System Settings.
Select Network Settings, Configure Network.
On the Basic Settings tab, select your wireless settings.
Select the name (SSID) of your wireless network. If your router isn't broadcasting your network's name, select Specify Unlisted Network and enter the name.
If your network has wireless security, enter your WEP or WPA key.
You can try fixing this using Xbox360 repair guide that covers almost all xbox 360 problems, you can get a copy from here http://xbox360repairguide.com
try restarting the router make sure u have a gold card or silver or what ever and u also have to have the wireless network adapter but u also have to a wireless router in order for the xbox360 to contact the router unless u have the ethernet cord plugged in i hoped tht helped u BYE
You cannot use the netgear wi-fi adapter as the xbox 360 will not be able to detect it. I suggest buying the wi-fi adapter specifically manufactured for the xbox360
