Question about Fahrenheat Electric Convector Baseboard Heater, 3'

I have a cinderblock house on concrete foundation that had a oil heater vented thru the roof. It was not vented to each room, small 900 sq ft home. It was in hall of living room but easily warmed the hole home. It was installed in late '50s, so, It cannot be replaced with new unit, they no longer make. I need an alternate source of heat. I was thinking of electric baseboard heaters. I don't know how to run the electrical thru cinderblock to each room, I guess there is a small attic. Could someone give me some direction as to type of heat and how to install? Thanks. Shirley

if the heater is 120 volt or 240 volt its really pretty easy. at either end is a cover. remove the cover and you'll see a wirenut or maybe just two wires. one side has an integral thermostat. connect your supply to the two wires on the thermostat. connect the other end in your breaker box with the appropriate sized circuit breaker. wire size feeding it will depend on its current draw. how many watts is the heater? 1500 watts will draw 6.25 amps at 240 volts so you can use 14 ga wire. 2000 watts will draw 8.3 at 240 volts - so 14 ga is still ok. 2500 watts at 240 draws 10.41 amps. 3000 watts draws 12.5 amps at this stage I'd use 12 gauge on a 20 amp breaker.

You need a meter, it will be hard without this! If you have 220v in the wall, then think of it like this; each wire is 120v. Test to each other, you get 220v. The thermostat is a double pole, you said. So think of it like this, its an adjustable temperature controlled switch that lets electricity through at the temp. you set it at. If you have 120v from one wire connected to one end of the element, and the other 120v connected to the other end of the element, then it will work. DO NOT CONNECT THE 120V TOGETHER. IT MUST GO THROUGH THE ELEMENT FIRST. The thermostat should be between the power from the wall and the element, to control the temperature.

Two 8 ft baseboards will heat this basement fine. You should eliminate any sources of flooding before you invest in refinished your basement.

this is a tough call but with 2000 watts in each room there should be more than enough heat .the rooms should maintain a average temp of 73 to 78 degrees temp without weatherazation and that is of course there is no drafts coming from any windows or near a front or back door that opens and closes alot . Basiclly you have it covered but definatley get the house winterize/insulated real good.I would keep 1 or 2 space heaters on hand just incase the person in house feels there cold just to cover yourself ,usually it the female complaining its cold if its not warm enough but there have been some males that need that temp to be 80 degrees all the time.good luck but im sure it will be ok!!

Convert 30pounds per sq.foot to pounds per cubic foot(concrete=150#/cubic foot at 1in. thick conc. slab).


These are not the same, so cannot be directly converted.

Pounds per sq ft is a measure of pressure, while lbs / cu ft is a measure of density, weight per unit volume.

I think maybe what you are doing here is converting the weight of concrete in a 1" slab, where a sq ft would contain

1 x 1 x 1/12 = .0833 cu ft

The figure of 150 lb/ cu ft is correct for the average density of concrete, so the above slab would have

1/12 x 150 = 12.5 lbs/sq ft at 1" thickness

BTW that is a thin slab of concrete, insufficient even for a light-duty pathway. If you are referring to a screed for tiling or similar, that is cement.

a cubic foot is a 12inch by 12inch square by 12inch depth its like stacking 1500 little sq. boxes in a room or two.a 12ft by12ft room with 8ft walls would hold 1152 cubic feet or little boxes.so in comparison 1500cu ft is little more than one room,1000sqft is a small house.

There are a few variables that determine the size needed to cool your home - the size of your home, type insulation, are just two. I have a 2600 sq ft home - about 1300 sq ft per floor. I choose to cool the entire second floor (bedrooms and baths) and two of the largest rooms on the first floor (kitchen & living room) via flexible ducts from an air handler installed in my attic. My house was built in 1960, and at the time had electric heat. This means it is fully insulated. I replaced all the windows with energy efficient types, and vinyl sided. I installed soffit, ridge and gable vents to keep my attic well ventilated. I can cool my house in Boston, MA to 70 degrees (when it is 85 degrees inside) with a 4 ton unit in a little over an hour with no problem (one ton of cooling is equal to about 12,000 BTUs). Your condenser should not run non-stop. If it is not cooling then it is not a thermostat problem, but could be a gas charge problem. If you haven't paid the contractor in full yet - that may be the reason why. The contractor should know how much cooling you need for the space you have and installed a properly sized unit. Make sure your air filters on the return are clean and replaced regularly. Call the contractor and explain the problem - he should be able to solve it for you very quickly.

What is the best temp to set your thermo for cooling a 2400 sq ft home?


I set mine at 73, seems to work for my home. Of course a lot of variables, Depends on how cool you like it, and of course how much you want to pay extra in gas/electric bill for this luxury. Of course I close any doors, or vents (if vented through vents) to not cool rooms not being used. On normal day that is in the 80's or 90's , 73 seems about right. Thanks Mike

The AC your landlord installed is rated at 8000 btu which is way too small for 900 sq ft. You need at least a 15000 Btu Air conditioner and a 'well insulated' house to be cool.
A good rule of thumb in the AC business says you need 1 ton (12000 btu) of Air conditioning for every 600 sq feet (if the house is well insulated) - if not - then you will need 1 ton (12000 btu) for every 400 sq feet.
So, if you have 900 sq feet and the house is well insulated you should have at least a 15000 btu unit.
If it's not well insulated you will need 24,000 btu.

Is there a way to vent a basement bathroom without cutting into the cement foundation


What is in the room above the basement bathroom?
And how large is the diameter of the vent pipe you need to run?
Do you have a maximum number of elbows, and runs of feet maximum you can't exceed?

Is the Frame wall above the foundation, accessible by going up thru the ceiling of the bathroom, and the elbowing over and into the outrside frame wall at that point?-- and then up a ways, and then out thru the outside wall?

Another possibility would be: How far to a window, or vent already in the basement?-- Could you run the piping there, and then out?

How thick is the concrete wall?-- Is it reinforced Concrete-- or just Masonry Block wall? A block wall is not as hard to get thru--

I know I asked a lot of questions-- but maybe it helps you think thru your options?

Well you have a 3 ton system, it might be a tick small depending on windows and insulation in the house. Make sure you set it at one temp and leave it. Zoneing would also help.

Your grandma may have the room sensor low on the wall. Trying to heat the last foot or so of the room may not be necessary. Even here in Alaska with a 1000 sq ft house I only use 2.1 gallons a day. 100 gallons a month is about 3 gallons a day, that sounds like a lot. Older folks sometimes like it hotter than most. 70 degrees is hot, anything above that will use a lot of fuel.
