Question about Dell Vostro 1000 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a dell vostro 1000. All of the sudden while I was working the screen started cycling through different color screens every second or so. I turned off the laptop and back on and it immediatly started doing the same thing. No boot msgs or anything. Guessing the video card is fried?

Hello ralittle

On a PC screen , the changing colors would be related to a bad connection between the video card and the screen.I suspect that this is the same problem you are experiencing.

While a laptop is not exactly like a computer , the screen cable does the same job. I recently had the same problem with my LCD. The vga cable was broken internally at the back of my screen and the screen kept going different colors uncontrollably. This was fixed by replacing the cable.

If you can open the laptop casing , I would recommend you remove the data cable from the graphics connector to the screen. Inspect the cable for any kinks or damage and reseat it if you can't see any.

This should solve the problem. The only other problems would be a faulty cable , blown component in the screen circuit board and possibly a broken graphics module but this is unlikely to cause this particular problem.

To test the possiblity that the problem is with the graphics adaptor , connect a external screen to the laptop and if this screen displays normally , then we can rule out a graphics card problem.

I don't have a maintenance manual for your laptop so unfortunately I am unable to tell you how to disassemble the laptop and you will need to carefully open it yourself to gain access to these components.

You can order the components you need HERE but I would stop with replacing the screen cable and if that does not solve the problem , it might be better to send it in to a pro as the screen costs about $200.

Please let me know if you need more help or info.

Kind Regards
StephanSA

Try to download the latest driver and check the power saving options how long it takes the screen to turn off when the computer is not in use.

Press DEL on startup and select "last best known config that worked" If that doesn't work you have probably corrupted the Win registry. Will need to take back to store, beware that if its a software fault you will have to pay and may lose all your data n the HDD!!!

My dell voster 1000 screen won't turn on, the computer it self will, but nothing will come up on the screen not even the back light!

Please run the built-in LCD test. You can do that by holding onto the D key, turn on the computer (don't release yet until something came out.) You should be able to see different blocks of colors to show that its good. However, if nothing comes up, connect an external monitor which would isolate the problem that we have. If display comes up then its definitely your LCD. Other than that it can be something else. Please let me know of the outcome in case we can provide an alternative solution. Thank you and regards.

Vostro 1000 black screen an i can hear it running, but can see..

A blank screen with evidence that the motherboard is working (the Capital "A" green light is probably the CAPS LOCK on your computer's keyboard) initially points to an output or video problem. One quick way to see if that is the case is if you connect the computer to an alternate screen. Do so with the "sick" computer powered off at first. After being sure the connections are snug, be sure that the test monitor is powered on and then turn on your "sick" Dell. If the test monitor runs as your laptop's monitor ran when it was healthy then you know there is a cabling/backlight/inverter/screen problem. Some of these can be solved very easily, some more expensively as replacement may be required.

On some laptops pressing down firmly on the keyboard may seat a screen cable to motherboard connection. That often works on IBM Thinkpads with screens that fade in and out due to a poorly seated screen cable connection to the motherboard.

So let's see how the test to a known working screen goes.

Update Dell Vostro 1000 BIOS now wont turn on, nothing on display

You may be in for some trouble, a failed bios update isn't always an easy fix. if you can find the cmos battery try to remove that for a few seconds. you will also need a disk version of the bios, download that from dell on another computer and copy it to floppy or cd and see if you can boot to that and reinstall the bios.

when you press the power button what happens, does it light up and run the fan? Nothing appears on the screen?
