Question about Canon Powershot SD450 / IXUS 55 Digital Camera

1 Answer

My camera shuts down and closes every time I try to take a picture. Have cleaned terminals, replaced battery. Noted that the two tiny holes near the lens flashes while I try to shoot. No trauma.

The problem started with the camera being able to be turned on yet when I pushed the shutter button, the camera lens closed and camera shut off. Lens not closing came only after multiple tries to get the dang thing to work.

My primary problem was the camera was able to be turned on, but shut off whenever I tried to take a picture. No flash. Can you address this?

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

OK, the thing with i actually needed to mention in the initial solution was...

The lens rings in the lens barrel is not in the original position, hence, at first you could actually see the lens move in and out. The thing is, every time you try to take a photo and try to zoom, or the camera tries to auto focus, the lens needs to move in the barrel(Optical Zoom). Now, each time the lens moves, but it gets stuck, because of the misalignment of the concentric rings in the barrel, hence the camera turns off.

For this repair you will need to take apart the whole camera, to get the the rings inside the lens. The repair will cast you about $40, if done by an professional. If you try to do this yourself, you might end up with a useless unit.

I really hope this can shed some light on the problem for you.

    Kind regards
    Andrea

I have a casio exilim ex-z280 and when i turn the camera on, the lens keeps closing, and stays shut. So all you can see is the shut lens on the screen. It was working last night, Now its not. Thanks...

Hi,
Make sure that battery cover closed properly & the memory card is place rightly while camera is ON,
May be battery is not holding charge or possibly loose contact between camera & the battery terminal, Make sure that your battery is fully charged & place battery in battery terminal in right direction (+,-), Sometimes battery terminal gets dirty, wipe it with clean dry cloth, There could be possible that your charger is faulty and not allow battery to charge. I would recommend you to try replacing new battery before sending your device to service center.

Re Nikon S220 digital camera. Lens error noted -

A tiny bit of grit can jam the gears of the lens. Sometimes a tap can knock it out. Try this at your own risk. Take out the batteries. Don't hit the camera on a hard surface, just use you hand. If it hurts, that is too hard. Try lens down, then all the sides.

Canon G3 camera just stopped working completely

Do you have a way to test the battery and you know it's ok?

Those batteries have built-in protection circuitry that can cut out or turn off the battery entirely if it detected a problem like a short circuit, etc. And it may not get over it.

Try a 2nd battery or the AC power adapter directly.

Also check that the 3 little pins in the camera DC input jack are intact, straight, and not touching each other.

Some camera's won't turn on if the memory card door is open or the card is ejected but I tested that on my G3 and it still turns on either way.

Ah.... and lastly... there is a little electrical limit switch connected to the battery cover door that disables the camera if the battery door is open. It gets pressed by a small plastic piece attached to the battery cover when you close the battery door. If the plastic piece or the tiny, recessed switch has an issue then the camera won't turn on The switch could be bypassed internally (not easy to do) if that was the problem.

Look for a tiny, thin, black plastic switch about as thin as a staple down in a recessed hole (slot) near the battery cover hinge. Try gentle pushing the battery closed switch "over" a little. You can tell which way to push by observing how the battery door slides into position as you close it. I was able to turn on my camera with the door open by doing this.
The switch is very tiny, don't break it.

If the battery door isn't closing all the way that would also cause the same issue.

FujiPix A345 it shuts off when I try to take a picture.

The most common causes of this are

1) Batteries at end of their charge - renew charge or replace batteries.

2) Poor battery contacts - remove batteries and clean contact terminals.

3) The rechargeable batteries (if used) have become deactivated, or the battery
capacity has diminished due to the memory effect.

4) The Auto power off function has turned the camera off.

Often a problem like this can be corrected by removing the batteries altogether cleaning the terminals and then reloading them. Also claen the terminals in the battery compartment itself.

Even New Batteries Wont Work. Camera Shuts Down Immediately

Clean front and back + - terminals in camera careful with fine emery paper. Also, MAKE sure batteries are not loose if they are they will not make the connection. Fine jeweler screwdriver will pick them out enough.VERY CAREFUL.I truly think this is it.regards Billy

Compartment door will not shut properly, camera will come on

Drill 2 tiny holes, large enough to insert thin paper clip wire. One hole is drilled in the battery compartment door, close to the sidewall but in between the 2 adjacent batteries.
Drill second hole in battery case by first peeling back the ruberized coating slighty. This hole should be adjacent or sighted in line with the first hole. In each case, allow enough in tact plastic door or case so that it can withstand the pressure of a tightened piece of wire. Insert batteries. Then insert wire carefully tto penetrate both holes. Press down hard on battery compartment door and carefully twist the 2 ends of the inserted paper clip wire to secure the compartment door tightly. The one drawback is that each time you wish to change batteries, you will have to follow the above procedure.Don't know of any recalls on this condition.

Camera shuts down when I go to take pic mode

Ahhhhh! I have the same problem occuring!! I cleaned all of the battery terminals and replaced the batteries, and STILL have this problem, although not as frequent. It always happens when I take the best pics, the image shows on the screen for a fraction of a second, and then the whole camera shuts off. Again, I can play back images with no problem. What's the deal here?? It's become so frustrating that I just want to throw the camera in the garbage. It has been such a good camera up until this point. PLEASE, someone help us here!!!

Coolpix 8800 shuts down

Make sure to use good NiMH batteries. Another possiblity is a problem with the card. Borrow a card and see if it has any effect. check to see that the pins in the card slot are all aligned, none out of place. check that the card door and the battery door close firmly, with some pressure. The camera can shut down when it has a problem detecting that the doors are closed. When it does turn on, play with the zoom without taking pictures, zoom in and out, if during zoom the camera shuts down then you might have a lens problem, something is malfunctioning in the lens mechanism and the camera shuts down to prevent damage. Good luck
