Symphonic choirs

The owner's manual is extremely vague regarding the initial setup.  I have successfully installed word builder and kompact symphonic choirs with all of the updates. However, I'm using a midi controller connected via usb to my computer. I can open both programs (WB and SC) but only get "oh's" and "ah's".  The word builder prints the bars for each phonetic sound in the window below the text box, but I can't get it to learn or play what's in the text box, only the generic "oh's and ah's".  I assume that I have done something wrong with the initial setup in and out ports.  I'm running Logic Studio 8 on a quad core mac pro (OS X leopard).  Please help or refer me to the right resources.  If I can't get this to run as a standalone, I'm certainly not going to get it to run in logic.
