i tried to connect a 4300 windows xp to a hp pavilion monitor and all i have is three colors blue green and red

Hi on your laptop a key has to be depressed in order to turn on display on the monitor - its probably Fn key+F5/F6/F7 and also ensure that the 15 pin connector of the monitor is plugged properly to the 15 pin D type jack on your laptop.
