Lexmark x2500, fax problems.

Lexmark x2500, fax problems. Always has been touchy but have found ways to work around in past by deferring transmit, quitting program and it would connect and fax at scheduled time. I think it has problems finding dial tone. Connected as cable modem ethernet to computer, phone cord from modem to "line" of internal fax modem. Perhaps just crappy software? If so, can anyone suggest a free/shareware alternative for infrequent fax use?
