My TI 84 won't convert my imaginary numbers to fractions. I typed in 1/(1+i) and it won't convert the answer to fraction form. It keeps saying Error Data Type

The TI-84 works with real fractions. It will not convert complex numbers to fractions.

You can convert the real and imaginary components to fractions separately. For your example, 1/(1+i) is .5-.5i. Converting .5 and -.5 to fractions, you get 1/2 + (1/2)i.

Hello: I have a very simple T125 X Solar Hand-held

Sorry its not possible with this particular model.
What my teacher in 6th grade did was make it mandatory for all of us to buy ti-30. This may sound drastic but its very cheap (only 10 dollars) and has severed me well for almost 9 years. Its can convert decimals into fractions and do native fraction manipulations.

Not working right in my precalc class. I switched mode to a+bi and then did the following problem (3+i)/(5+3i).....it gave me an answer in decimals. Teachers wanted it in fraction form. When i tried to...

  1. From the calculator there is no solution. It just cannot do it because it does not have a Computer Algebra System or CAS. To have a CAS, Get the TINSPIRE CAS calculator.
  2. From you, there is a solution. You must multiply the numerator and denominator of your fraction by the conjugate of the denominator (5-3i).
  3. Thus your expression becomes [(3+i)(5-3i)]/[(5-3i)(5+3i)]
  4. After you expand and separate into real and imaginary parts, you get
  • Numerator= 18-4i
  • Denominator = 34
  • Reduced result is 9/17 -2i/17.

Believe me, it is much easier to do it by hand than try to get the calculator do do something it was not designed for. And doing certain calculations by hand DOES foster true understanding. Now it is up to you.

I am trying to use this calculator to do Organic chemistry and general chemistry problems which involve very large numbers and very small numbers or various numbers to both negative and positive...

Make sure you use the (-) key in the left column above the RCL key to enter negative exponents, not the - key which subtracts.

Do get all results in decimal instead of fraction notation, press SHIFT [SETUP] 2 to select LineIO mode.

Trying to enter Chemistry equations and it won't work...

the way i enter my equations is a bit different from what you're doing, i use the fraction button to do division problems, i just feel it makes it easier to read.
anyway, the fraction button is on the far left, 3rd button down (it looks like a white box on top of a line, and below the line is another empty box). press that, and you can type 1.0x10^-14 on the numerator.
it seems that you haven't discovered the EXPONENT button. that button is on the same row as the fraction button, it looks like an x with a white box next to it. press that once you've typed out "1.0x10", and then type -14. the negative button btw is below the fraction button, and looks like this: (-)
press the right arrow twice on the circle thingy at the top of all the keys, and that'll advance you to the denominator. type 2.0x10^-5, using that nifty exponent key. press the equal sign and it'll solve it for you, all in scientific notation (the answer is 5x10^-10). the problem with this calculator is, it won't expand that answer for you with all the decimals and everything, but if its chemistry that shouldn't be a problem.
also, you can certainly use the "x10^x" button on the very bottom of the keypad (its next to the decimal button). by using this key, you won't have to press the exponent button since you can just type in the exponent directly next to the 10.

as for that negative log of 5.6, just input the negative, the log button is right next to the exponent button, and your number and yeah....it's that easy :]

i hope you like this caculator, it has so many functions (have you seen the size of the manual??)
good luck on your chemistry test!

Problems with fractions on the Casio fx-115es

Hello,
To convert fractions to decimals or decimals to fractions, you use the [S<->D] key. Each time you press the key the result is displayed in the other format.
Alternatively, If you multiply or divide two integer numbers put a decimal mark at the end of one of the numbers (any one). The result will be displayed in decimal format.

Hope it helps.

Can not get nothing but fractions for answer

You have to set how the calculator handles numbers. To do this follow these steps: 1. Press the 'MODE' button. This brings up the calculator's main settings page. 2. Scroll down until you reach a field titled 'Exact/Approx...'. This is the setting for how the calculator handles numbers, whether it will show the exact answer (which is usually in fraction format) or whether it will show an approximate number (which will be in decimal format). 3. Press the right arrow which will bring up the options for that setting. You must now choose between three ways of handling numbers: -'1:AUTO' will determine which type of answer the calculator will give based on what numbers you want it to calculate (e.g. if you want an answer in decimal format just add a decimal somewhere in your problem). -'2:EXACT' will automatically display all answers in either whole number format or in fraction format. -'3:APPROXIMATE' will automatically display all answers in decimal format. 4. After you have selected one of those options pres enter one more time to get out of the 'MODE' dialogue and return to the 'HOME' screen. Now try a problem and see what happens. Personally I like using 'AUTO' because then I don't have to keep returning to 'MODE' when I want either or. Hope this helped, I had the same problem when I first started using the TI-89.
