The tapes and tape drive were stored ina a sealed box nothing should be dirty

  • rayne_lynn2 Sep 17, 2010

The drive has never been used nor has the tapes. The software that came with the unit does not go to XP and so I need new software. I contacted Quantum and they gave me instructions on updating drivers to XP but said I needed xp compatible software to be able to run the program sucessfully. When I run the backup program as is it does not approve the tape media with the software installed.

It is not the device that is being rejected but the software that came with the device.

  • rayne_lynn2 Sep 17, 2010

Your solution is for a hardware issue and not a software one. The drive functions ok it does not accept the software because it is not for xp operating system. What I need is to have a program that will work with this tape drive to backup my hard drive

Hi!

I'm not sure if that's the type of solution you are looking for, but using NovaBACKUP, by NovaStor will do it for you! Your drive is listed as one of the supported drives, so I'm sure there won't be any problems...

Hope I helped you,
Pelu.

That tape drive is what it's called a serial backup device - one on which the files are copied and then left like that. If you want to change some files from the ones on the tape you must start the backup process all over again - it's not like a hard disk, where you can replace files individually. You must also take into consideration the fact that this tape unit has its content compressed to a proprietary format, that can only be read and decompressed by the software that came with it.
Your problems are caused by the fact that because of the characteristics of the unit it's incompatible with the backup program. You can't fix that - either use one of the 2 the programs that came with the unit or just abandon it.

Rayne, I am sure you are using XP driver with XP. Please disconnect the device from the PC and uninstall it. Reboot. Install the drivers and reboot. Now reconnect the device and allow windows to detect the device and load its drivers.

Try to use a cleaning cartridge. If the tape drive is still not recognizing the tape media after you clean it then your heads are bad

Unable to retrieve data

If the machine hasn't been altered in all those years, retrieving the data shouldn't be a problem. If I remember correctly from my days with one of those, the driver software made the tape drive appear as any other drive in Windows so it was just a matter of copying data to and from the drive just like any other hard drive in the system.
