Question about Carolina Manufacturing Perception Carolina 14.0 Kayak

Open Question

I purchased a 14' Perception Carolina kayak with rudder last year. On my first outing, I left the rudder up in the out of water position. However, from my pressing on the foot pedals, some pressure was transferred via the rudder cable to the rear assembly. There are two flimsy ring clips that connect the cable to the rudder and these bent- one was lost in the water while the other was bent beyond repair. How can I find replacement parts for the rudder assembly or is there a better solution than these flimsy parts?

SOURCE: Carolina rudder does not work properly

Slider to which the pegs are attached is probably binding, take entire mechanism out (2 screws), and lubricate with silicone wax. If that doesn't work, replace sliders and pegs.

SOURCE: is it worth get a skeg (non moving rudder)($75)

We have a 20ft Necky Tofino, and I installed a new SmartTrack rudder system on it last year. My wife is 5'2" and I'm 5'11", and we both love it because it's easily adjustable while you're sitting in the kayak. We can switch seats at any time with no problem.

The whole thing came to $250 with a spare blade.

Is there some way to (personally) drop the rudder sufficiently into the water for it to work properly? If so, how?

Hi Penny:
My experience with kayak rudders is that they can be raised and lowered by pulling on a cord attached to the rudder. Mine was secured by a bungee so that the cord lay flat on the deck but was easily accessed by reaching back.
With your kayak out of water, manually raise and lower the rudder and look at the assembly where it rotates. There should be holes there to accept cords as I described.
If all else fails, Go to a beach where there are other kayakers and ask to see theirs (rudders).

Intex Challenger K1 Rudder

No rudder system is available for INFLATABLE kayaks. They are no good for oceans or lakes only a swimming pool. Get a good solid Ocean Kayak or other brand that is RIGID. Your life may depend on it.

Point 65 tequila. is it possible to fix a rudder to this model as the nose wanders about when set up as a duo. ??

I have just bought a Tequila, and though I love it, I know what you mean. The problem is that the stern keel doesn't sit low enough when 2 people are on board. In duo config, with 1 person sitting aft, it handles fine, since the stern keel is more submerged.
I am working on a fixed rudder/skeg. Will post when I am successful.

Does anyone make a rudder kit for the pungo 140?

Rudder systems on sit-on-top kayaks are not practical, but if one is made, it is made by the manufacturer of the kayak in question. I don't think there is....only the Hobie and a few others.

Can you fix a hole in the bottom of a kayak?

Try using a product called Marine-tex it can be purchased @ most outdoor goods stores. It is not that expensive and is a 2 part compound that is very easy to use and does not dry so fast you can't work with it. I have used it to patch aluminum boat hulls and fiberglass PWC's. Give it a try..

Knukles hit handles on synergy kayak

This may mean that you are not holding the paddle correctly. To make sure that you have a proper grip hold paddle in both hands and bring over your head. Make sure that your hands are approximately shoulder width apart bend arms so that they create a 90degree angle on either side of your head, this will ensure that your hands are in the proper position and you can then lower the paddle and begin paddling. This should eliminate any contact your knuckles have with the boat.
