Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

1 Answer

Just purchased a new 160gb Hard Drive for my old Dell Inspiron 6000; originally it was only 60 gb. I tried to install it, it said "not able to read HD". Actual connectors look a little different. Any info?

Well the old Dell takes ATA connections. Newer laptops are SATA. Which did you buy?
A new disk drive needs to be partitioned and the operating system needs loaded. Did you do that?
Did you back up all your data to an external device so you can load it on the new disk?

It's possible that the only problem is that the replacement disk-drive needs to be "initialized" for first-time usage. Or, it's possible that your Dell won't support your new _larger_ disk-drive.

Did they send you a disk-drive with _greater_ capacity than your old 60GB drive?
It's possible that they "upgraded" you, because they had no (small) 60GB disk-drives in inventory.

Take your Dell "System Restore" set of CD/DVD disks, and reinstall Windows.
The Windows Installer will "initialize" your disk-drive.

Those codes all apply to the hard drive itself..

Replacing the hard drive is all you should have to do.

Halarious, I had the same problem yet I used norton ghost. At least you still show 160 gb. Mine went all the way to 60 gb. Here is what I had to do to reclaim the lost. I downloaded something called "Magic Boot Disk" It gave me the whole 320 back yet have not found good cloning software yet. Magic Boot Disc is freeware avaliable at http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2006.02.10-Magic-Boot-Disk/ Good luck cloning

Upgraded hard drive, from 80gb to 250gb. I have had to reload my os twice. it appears that the bios is not recognizing my hd. a friend said that the inspiron 6000 does not do well with a hd bigger then...

I dont think we can use a hard disk of 160gb in an inspiron 6000. and make sure you bought a ATA hard drive and not a SATA drive. For the Western digital try to reinstall XP and install the device drivers before installing application s/w.

You could image or ghost the old drive, but you need to have access to it from another system with storage to save the information as there no way to have both drives installed in this model. I believe the easiest and preferred method would be to perform a clean install. You can use a borrowed OS CD provided you have your own product key. You could then get an external USB enclosure to connect your old drive to retrieve data.

I PLUG IN A BRAND NEW WESTINGH. HARD DRIVER 160 GB AND COMPUTER S

did you configure the 160GB hard drive as second???
there is a shorting pin between the ribbem cable and the power cable.
take a look on the hard drive, there should have adiagram shows where the shorting pin need to go to make it as secondary drive.
install the hard drive as secondary drive.
if you want the drive to be the primary. you nee to install the operating system on it.
with out operating system the machine will boot up in to DOS only, and a error message telling you the drive has no loader.

How to Install a new HD on Dell Inspiron 6000?

You can always parition the drive, and install both Ubuntu and XP (dual boot).

Yes, you will be able to access the files (providing the drive isn't totally crashed), although Ubuntu may not "know" what the files are.
