Brother P-Touch labeller error message "Encoder Error"

When I press "print"on my Brother P-touch PT-2700, I get the message ENCODER ERROR. The list of error messages in Trouble Shooting guide does not contain this message. How do I handle this?

    same thing as described. Just took out of box, typed one line into labeler, hit print button, nothing happened but ENCODER ERROR appears in the screen.

SOURCE: brother mfc-215c unable to clean?

@artkoy:

There is no Error 10 within the maintenance of the printer!
An error starting with 10 (and two more digits) belongs to the communication device (fax).

Plz check again what two digit error you have and post again.

@peter:

you need a new waist ink absorber. plz check the forum for unable to clean or error 46. Its explained many times.

SOURCE: change cartridge Problem - Brother BRTPT65 P-Touch Model PT-65 Home and Hobby Label Maker Printer

Once you snap in the catridge you have to put the back of the p-touch back on. After that you can feed through the tape by pressing Code Space. If the back of your P-touch is not on it will not advance through.... I learned the hard way :) Hope it helps you all.

SOURCE: can't change the font style & size on my Brother PT-65 Label make

In case you've forgotten how to change the text size, hold down 'Code' and '& Size' key to display the current setting. While still holding the Code button, push and release the '&' key to change the size.

To reset, I would try removing the batteries for a few minutes before reinstalling them.

Just two guesses.

I think the encoder strip needs to be cleaned with a lint free cloth. If the encoder strip gets dirty, many different problems can occur.

If the machine still errors, the encoder strip needs to be replaced - Part Number LS4467001
If the machine still errors, replace the carriage PCB assembly - Part Number LS6543001
If the machine still errors, replace the Printhead - Part Number LK3211001
If the machine still errors, replace the Main PCB assembly - Part Number LT0284011

When I try to print with my Brother PT-1200 label maker, it says "ERR" and does nothing. I changed batteries and the label cartridge but still nothing.

open the back of the label maker. remove the cartridge. in the lower right hand corner of the where the cartridge fits, there are 3 little posts that are pushed in when you insert the cartridge. find the holes on the cartridge that fit over those posts. cover the holes on the cartridge with tape. reinsert cartridge. try again. worked for me. If you push in the posts individually, you can figure out which one is giving you the error message. I'm not sure that it really makes a difference. I taped over all three holes and it worked fine after that. i realize its not a perfect fix, but may allow you to print anyways!

I have a brother MFC - 490CW... There is a printing error that reads Unable to print 70

There are several issues that can cause an Unable to Print message. Try the following in succession until the printer works.
1) Get a lint free cloth and clean the encoder strip. Lift the scanner unit until it locks open and slide the print head to the right if it isn't there. The encoder strip is in front of the white vinyl band. There is a warning to not touch the encoder strip - this applies to touching it with your hands. Grab the encoder strip (both sides) with the cloth. Wipe vigorously from one end to the other and return at least three times (left to right then right to left each time).
2) Check for any foreign objects (paper or anything else) in the print head path. Use a flashlight to check the corners of the unit. Check under the print head (including that right hand side where it rests during the cleaning of the encoder strip). Move it to the left to check if you moved it to the right.
3) Open the back Jam Clear Cover and check for any jammed paper. Remove anything you find that doesn't belong. Close the Jam Clear Cover.
4) Now close the scanner unit. (If you do this before opening and closing the Jam Clear Cover, the error will not reset at all.) If the error is not cleared, clean the encoder strip again.
5) If the error continues to persist, cycle the power by unplugging the printer for at least two seconds. Then plug it back in.
6) When the error message is gone, run a test by printing the Help List. Press Menu and select Print Reports > Help List and then press Black Start.
7) If the report prints, you have fixed the printer. If it doesn't print and you have cycled the power, the unit needs service. If it is under warranty contact Brother. Before having the unit serviced transfer any faxes in memory to another fax machine if you can. To do this you need to have set a Station ID for this printer (before the error message). If you do have this set, press Menu and go to Service > Data Transfer > Fax Transfer. If you are prompted to enter a fax number, you have faxes in memory. Enter the fax number of the unit that can store the faxes and press Black Start. (If No Data appears, there are no stored faxes. Press Black Start to exit the menu.)

I hope this helps.

Printer won't work.On the display it says:unable to clean. see trouble shooting and maintenance guide. I don't have a manual.

Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device.You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41,49 or 4F the print head is defective.If the error is 48 - defective print head cable or circuit board.If the error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service.If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:
Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.This will reset the purge count value. Then restart the printer, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.
