Question about Heating & Cooling
Not good news...the manufacturer is issuing this disclaimer because of a reason. I would contact the manufacturer and explain the situation to them, since you couldn't replace the batteries as you were out of town.

I don't know which wires are required for the A/C, but you a thermostat is a switch, and if you can figure out the wires, you can jumper them to a temporary switch to turn the a/c on and off manually- that's the only workaround I can think of until you get another thermostat. If you're in a dorm room, they should have replacement units.
