Fan switch for fan light combo

Unfortunately, there is no standard color coding for ceiling fan wiring. You note in your video that the replacement switch has an L(ine) terminal and there should be 1, 2, and 3 terminals as well for controlling fan speed. Check the switch you are replacing for similar marking. If you are in luck, you can replace by L and numbers rather than colors. I checked my entire file of fan installation information and nothing more explicit is provided

What westinghouse 3 speed ceiling fan switch replaces a K T E E87488 ceiling fan switch

Hello Joanne,

Sorry for the late reply. Some 3-speed switches are as easy to replace as giving me the model number and serial number of the fan and plugging a new one in. In most cases though, we ask the customer to write down the color code (which colored wires go where in the switch) then I have to break open the switch to identify it. Since I field phone calls from all over the US and Canada, I ask the customer to mail me the switch. You can reach me toll-free at 1-866-600-3267.

Fan switch was removed from the fan. I have 4 wires for the switch. 2 brown, 1 gray and 1 black. On the switch it has the letter L numbers 1, 2, 3 on it which wire goes on which number?

This is a bad situation. Ceiling fan 3-speed switches are not universal and neither is the wiring codes. I always make sure to right down the color codes and where they plugged into the switch before removing wires. I can maybe narrow one down but will assume no responsibility. L stands for line and is usually power into the switch, which is normally black, but not always.

I have a 3 speed fan switch with 4 wires. The wire colors are grey, black, yellow, and brown. Where do they go such as L,1,2,3 on the switch?

Did you get a wiring diagram with the switch/fan? This should tell you which is which.

Each manufacturer has different color coding. If you didn't get a diagram, contact the manufacturer for instructions.

Good luck,

Electrical box has one red and one black wire and the switch has two balck wires and a green wire. How do I connect them?

If I understand correctly, you are replacing a switch that has a black and red wire?
And your new switch has 2 black wires + green wire

The green is color-code for ground, and it always connects to bare ground wire.
The switch wires are not color-coded (both are black) so they can connect to either of the two wires that came off old switch.
If switch does not operate, they try reversing the two black wires.

As a general rule, the wires inside your box are color-coded.
The color-code information says:
The black is the Hot from breaker box. This wire carries electricity from the breaker to the switch.
The red wire goes to Load (fan, light, motor). This wire carries electricity to the Load when you turn ON the switch.

Fan works, but not the lights, made electrical connections.

mcdevito75 here, The lights should work when the wall switch is turned on, You may have to remove the wall switch cover to check the color of the wires and then the cover just at the ceiling of your fan, follow the fan wires from the pull switch for the fan, since the fan works you don"t have to worry about those wires, just the others for the lights, match the color codes, from the wall switch to the light wires. You may have a RED from the wall switch and red from the fan, hook them togethet then the black or white wires. You may not have a red from the wall, rather a white and blck. Make sure wall switch is off and or fuse / circut breaker is off while working on the se wires.

Wiring code for ceiling fan

These fans do not have a standard color code for the fan switch. What you can do is turn off the power, keep the white neutral connected. Then using the black power wire take one of the switch wires and connect to that black, turn the power on and observe the speed .. low mark it 1, medium mark it 2, high mark it 3. Repeat untill you have identified all the speed wires. Then connect these wires to the 1,2,3, terminations of your new switch

Yellow, purple, black, and orange wires and need L,1,2,3 connect.

How many wires are coming up from the wall switch? If it's one black and hot wire one white, and your speed switch is on the fan, you connect the hot to the 'line' wire on the switch and the other colored wires are your 3 speed wires (high, med. low)
