### Our 17year old GE gas oven/broiler stopped lighting today. What might be the problem? Stove burners work.

Most likely culprit is the igniter.
When you turn the oven on it opens a gas valve allowing a small amount of gas to flow thru the pilot light. The igniter then lights the pilot and when the sensor determines the pilot is lit it opens th emain gas valve and the oven lights. If the igniter fails and doesn't light the pilot the sensor doesn't heat up and it shuts down the pilot and nothing works.
The igniter is usually accessable under the oven by removing the drawer. It has a single wire attached and looks like a short cigarette made of ceramic witha metal tip.
You didn't provide model number so I can't give you part number but if you look it up here you may be able to get one from Sears

### Oven does not work: pilot light out? How feasible (how dangerous) to try to relight pilot light? T Phillips Winston-Salem, NC

Actually, your oven probably doesn't have a pilot light at all. In order to ignite the oven, it has an oven igniter. If you open the broiler, look up on the "ceiling" of the broiler to the back of the burner. There, you'll see a white block. That is the igniter. What it's supposed to do is heat up (electrically) and when it heats up enough, the gas valve turns on and the oven lights. What happens with these, is that the heating element on it opens from years of use and must be replaced. Inside the broiler door (usually) is the stove's model and serial numbers. Write them down and visit your local appliance parts store with those numbers and they'll give you a new one. (Usually around $30-$45 or so.) Also, you can usually change the igniter from inside the oven by removing the bottom drip plate, so that'll save your back a lot of straining. :)

I hope this helps and hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

### My broiler stopped working recently. The oven itself works, but the broiler flames are not lighting. I'm thinking it might be a pilot problem.

### How to relight the pilot light?

There is an easy way to relight a pilot light in an oven/broiler if you do not have long fireplace matches and you are scared to stick your arm in with a regular lighter: Light a long stick of incense, but do not blow out the flame. Open the broiler door. Turn the oven to "broil" and extend the lit incense stick in \to the back of the broiler space. Wave the incense stick slowly back and forth below the broiler coil towards the rear of the oven until you hear the pilot light ignite, then pull the incense stick out, blow out the flame and insert into an incense holder.

### How do i re ignite the pilot light

Hi

The surface on this range have standing pilots that must be lit initially. To light them:
1. Be sure the surface burner control knobs are in the "OFF" position.
2. Remove the grates and cook top.
3. Locate the pilot ports and light each of them with a match. Replace the cook top and grates.

Light the oven burner pilot in the following manner:
1. Be sure the oven control knob is in the "OFF" position.
2. Remove the broiler carriage.
3. Hold a lighted match at the top forward section of the pilot (See diagram). No adjustment is required.
4. Replace the broiler carriage.
Hope this helps...

### The oven doesn't come on-but the self clean and broiler work

Check the electronic starter/pilot ignition on the bottom oven burner. It may be dirty, too far away from the pilot gas or the temp sensor on the pilot light flame may need replacing.

### Where is the pilot on an old Tappan oven? The top burners work and light, but the oven isnt turning on. There is something under there that is glowing .

That thing that is glowing is your oven igniter. Most modern ovens do not have a pilot light. The way the burner assemblies for the oven and broiler work is by an electric igniter with a gas safety valve. When the igniter reaches a certain current potential, it opens the gas safety valve, gas flows and you have ignition. This is a designed safety feature that prevents free flowing gas from entering the oven without ignition. If you can see the igniter glowing and the oven still does not light, more than likely you have a weak igniter. They do wear out with age and require replacement from time to time. There is a separate igniter for bake and broil. Usually, the oven igniter wears out faster than the broiler because of the frequency of use. the following link explains a little theory about igniter types and how they work. It also explains how to replace a defective one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

This is a very simple repair that anyone can do. just make sure you follow al the steps in the link provided. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know before you rate the solution. If you need assistance in locating a replacement igniter, let me know also. I hope this helps you.

### Burners on gas stove work but oven and broiler not working

Most ovens, unless they have an electric igniter (does it go tick tick tick when plugged in and turned on? If so, it has an electic ignition.) have a pilot light. In order to keep gas from flowing out, and to prevent a possible explosion when the pilot light has gotten put out, they have an electric thermocouple on them that shuts off the gas when it gets cold. Plug the cord back in, and relight your pilot light by holding the lighter (I recommend a fireplace match or bbq lighter, not a cigarette lighter to prevent singed knuckle hairs!) over the thermocouple for a couple of minutes.
