If it is not in,under or right outside your house you can always shut it off at the water meter, usually located on the property line under a metal cover. use a crescent wrench or channel lock pliers. if more than one family is on this one meter, notify everyone involved about your repair problem and co-ordinate a time to turn off the water that is convenient for everyone.

I have a mixer tap in the kitchen sink. The hot water tap runs fine but I am not getting any cold water. I also have a bath downstairs and the cold water tap there is fine

You will have to turn off your water mains and strip your mixer tap. It is possible that the seal (if it is an older tap with a rubber seal) has become stuck or the threaded part that turns it has gone faulty. If it is a modern tap with ceramic seals, check the operation of the mechanism and see why the ceramic seal is not being opened.

Slow filling with cold water

Hiya,
this can be a water presure issue with your mains or maybe the inlet tap to your machine is not open fully i would surgest checking the connection tap is open fully & allowing the maximum amount of water through to your machine.. if you sink taps run slow then this would be a sign of your water mains presure needing attention.. presure can also be reduced by using water around the house at the same time as the machine is on for example running a bath, dishwasher, flushing the toilet etc.

Hope this helps

I have mixer taps on my bath, cold water tap works

Remove the tap outer cover. Take out the barrel & inside there is the washer on the end of a screw which slides in and out when the tap is turned. This could have been turned too far out and will not go back in. Clean both the screw thread and inside the barrel, lubricate with petroleum jelly or similar and reassemble & test before replacing the barrel. Again lubricate all threads.
Alternatively buy a new barrel

Was the tap shut-off very tight and the tap is turning but the main shaft may not be turning. Check the hot tap mechanism and compare it to the cold tap.

Water valve jammed

hi it sounds as though its stuck due to verdigris & scale, a common problem.if you break it all thats likely to happen is the spindle will shear off, which will mean a new one anyway. If you dont want to do this I suggest you turn off the water to the storage tank & open the cold taps till the water stops you can then replace the washer.whilstthe water is drained i suggest a new valve to be fitted for future servicing etc, also it might pay you to fit a service valve on the supply to the tap.
