Question about Kenmore 98702 Stacked Washer/Dryer

6 Answers

Regarding the washer, I set the dial to 8 minute wash, and for a small load, it fills with water for a small load then the washer just "Hums", it does not start the agitator cycle. I can then set the washer to drain and the water will drain out. Could it be the Motor Transmission or could it be something with the dial?

  • robert_m_pir Sep 16, 2010

I received to reply's with 2 different answers, Let me try one more from another expert.

  • robert_m_pir Sep 16, 2010

I currently am not at the location where my washer/dryer is. Its located at my cabin in the mountain.

Can I get back to you next week? I will be going there this week and I will get the model number of the unit.

    Thanks

  • robert_m_pir Sep 16, 2010

I just thought of something, i have the motor & Pump at home, If I get the P/N off the motor, can you tell what model of Washer/Dryer it goes into ? Please advise.

    Thanks

  • robert_m_pir Sep 17, 2010

I went home last night and looked at the motor and pump and these are the P/N's I read off the parts:

    Motor:

    P/N: 131902822

    Model: C68PXGJR-4556

    Pump:

    Askoil

    Model M66

    10 Min on / 60 Min off

So based upon the above Part Numbers, can you tell what model of Kenmore Washer/Dryer it is ?

I need to go to the cabin this weekend and check the Tub Bearings and the Lid Switch.

But the Motor Pully turns Freely

  • robert_m_pir Sep 17, 2010

I have submitted my question to 3 different "experts" and received 3 different answers, just looking for 2 of the same answers with a solution

  • robert_m_pir Sep 20, 2010

Ok I have the Model & Serial now

    Model: 417.92702200

    Serial # : XE24600851

    Built: 11/02

Went to my cabin this week and got the #'s

Also another thing I noticed, with the motor out of the machine, the drum will only spin counter-clockwise with your hand, could that mean a Transmission problem ?

Shouldn't the drum go both ways during the agitation cycle ? This could be the culprit, please advise.

  • robert_m_pir Sep 20, 2010

The Kenmore Model/Serial #'s are as follows:
    Mod - 417.92702200
    Ser - XE24600851
Also should the Drum be able to turn both ways with the belt off ? Right now it will only turn Counter-clockwise

  • robert_m_pir Sep 20, 2010

The Model/Serial #'s for my Machine are as follows:

    Model - 417.92702200

    Serial - XE24600851

Another possible problem : With the belt off the drum Pully, should the drum be able to spin by hand both ways ? Right now it will only hand spin counter-clockwise, should this be the case ? or is this my problem ?

    Thanks,

  • robert_m_pir Sep 20, 2010

I obtained the Model/Ser #'s for the subject unit

    Model - 417.92702200

    Serial - XE24600851

While obtaining the above numbers, I also noticed that when I hand turn the Tub, it only goes Counter-clockwise (With Belt removed) in the agitation cycle does the tub go both ways?

  • robert_m_pir Sep 20, 2010

Does the tub spin both ways? I checked it this weekend and the tub spins counter-clock wise by hand with the belt off.
    Also the Model # is a Kenmore 417.92702200, Ser # XE24600851.
So I have been told, its the Motor, Lid Switch, tub bearings and so on. I'm getting all kinds of answers, maybe I should just buy a new one. Please help !!!

Remove the main access panel (usually in the back). Is the motor spinning, but the drive belt isn't? If so, then you have a drive belt problem. If the motor is not spinning then its motor fault. Try this procedure as follows:--- Upon removing the main access panel, you observe the motor spinning but the drive belt is not or is moving intermittently. This is a drive belt problem which may require replacement. Try these tips first:
1) If the belt has a lot of play, loosen and slide the motor so there is a 1/2 to 3/4 inch in the belt.
2) Check that the pulley is tightly attached to the motor. If not, then tighten
3) If the belt is worn and frayed looking, replace it.
If the belt still won't turn there is a problem in the washer transmission.
------------
If your washing motor hums, but otherwise refuses to spin, there are a few things to check before replacement of the motor becomes necessary.
1) With the power off to the washer, remove the main access panel, then pull the drive belt that's attached to the motor and see if it moves freely and is not bound up. If the belt refuses to turn, then suspect a burnt motor that will need replacement.
2) Check the connections to the motor. Make sure they are tightly secured. Loose connections can cause a reduction in power to the motor, allowing enough for it to hum, but not enough to turn the motor.
Replacing a washer motor is a fairly simple process:
1) Disconnect the wires, remove the mounting bolts, then remove the motor. Bench test it, if you wish to confirm failure.
2) Order a replacement that matches the original, especially in regards to its mounting arrangement. Compare the old one to the new one. Is the mounting bolt(s) in the same place?
3) Mount the motor and reattach the wires. When attaching the drive belt, give it a 1/2 -3/4 inch deflection at the midpoint. Your tub should spin now.
---------
But if both the motor, the drive belt and even the transmission is functioning properly and you are confirmed that all is working, but still there is a problem, then the problem is there is something wrong with either the timer control dial or the agitator solenoid.

Hello Robert. In order to reset the water level you must turn the dial to the highest setting and then back to what you want. So in your example, turn the water level to max and then back to small load. After you do this, see if it works properly. If it does, great. If not, the problem is most likely in the dial. Joe

Hi,
If the motor hums when it should be agitating in all cycles it is the motor...
If the motor just hums in that one cycle, then it is the timer...

So check out what is going on and then replace the bad part...

Sounds like either a motor problem, or your tub bearings are seized up and tub is not spinning which is common. Try spinning the tub by hand. It should spin really easy if the the bearings are good.

A Faulty start capacitor or faulty clutch could also cause the motor to hum and not operate normally.
The motor should be running in drain and spin. If the motor is not
running or humming then the most likely cause of this problem is not the
motor or timer but the lid switch.
If it hums, it could be motor, tub bearings or clutch.

From what I have been told by Kenmore. There are several machines that use these parts including other brands that aren't even kenmore. There are over 20 machines that use these parts.

So what you are saying, is that I need to get the Model # of my specific machine before we can go further, is that what I hear you say ?

  • Nate Stansfield

The tub only spins one way, the agitator rotates back and forth and up and down. The motor or tranny doesn't do with the draining. That would be the pump.

If the motor is having a starter capacitor it has gone weak. Look into the motor and see that a capacitor is fitted on the windings. Remove to connect the same value of MFD/Voltage.
The motor should run now.
If this wont solve also check iff there is friction on the spindle that is preventing the motor to turn.
Remove the belt and check for free movement of the spindle or else remove to refit.

I had a similar problem - had to get a technician out - there was a valve at the back of the machine that allows the machine to fill. It had split (apparently its a common problem? there are separate valves for hot and cold water, so I'm not sure if using a different cycle choice (ie cold only), may let the machine fill?). 10 minute fix job

My would fill up with water then not spin. Then it would do nothing. I called a repair man out it was the safety switch. You remove the top where the dial is and to the left side of the machine you will see a black connector, it plugs into the switch, the swtich will have a green ground wire. I replaced the switch it works great. The switch is $8 on amazon.

Washer hums

Under the tub is a round coupling that wears out. This needs to be replaced. When the washer is over loaded it puts to much stress on this coupling and wears it out. You have to take out the drum to replace it. As for it not filling, check the water vavles that supply the washer they may have been turned off

Kenmore front-load washer stops at rinse cycle

When the washer initially fills for the wash, is it only hot water entering the drum? Try switching the water temperature between hot and cold as it fills. If any of them show little or no water getting through, it sounds too easy but check to make sure water supply taps are on, and that the cold/hot fill hoses aren't reversed. Remove the fill hoses and check any of the screen filters for blockage (in the hoses and in the inlet water valve). When the machine stops and waits to fill but all you hear is a hum, it sounds like there is power going to the valve but water is not able to get through it.
Good luck!

Its fills with water but then sits & hums - dont agitate, drain

It sounds like the controller/timer is bad. If this is an old dial timer type control, can you turn the control and cause the washer to drain? If so, replace the timer control.
If it's an electronic control, then look for a failed sensor as it's very unlikely to be the control.
