Go to computer management by right clicking 'my computer' then selecting 'manage'. Then select disk management. Find your externel hard drive there ( it should be there). Then right click on it, and choose assign drive letter. Just choose a letter in the middle of the alphabet like N or O, then enter. You should see the icon of your external hard drive inside 'my computer'.

You made my day. I was ready to throw a very good Toshiba external hard drive away. After making it visible and cleaning it up, it now works very well. Thank you! Thank you!

How do I start a manual backup with a Toshiba model 593400-A Convio 500GB drive?

Your ANSWER depends on your operating system?

FREE BACKUP PROGRAM CALLED: "EaseUS Todo Backup" takes ALL of the hard work and mystery out of backups! Find it here:
SO easy they are showing a GIRL doing it!

EaseUS Todo Backup Free

Diane, EXTERNAL USB 3.0 (backup) hard drives (at 500GB) are extremely reasonable now and MAY be your best bet for reliable and EASY backups! See eBay ~ not Amazon.

Heck since you won't be using that drive often
you can consider a USED External Hard 500GB drive (USB 3.0) for about $20! Diane, THAT is VERY reasonable "insurance".

Now be careful and READ the fine print! Be SURE you are NOT buying a case/enclosure ONLY!

Also know that many newer USB Drives have software that is often included.

Toshiba 500gb portable drive only shows 230gb after imaging my c drive

Sounds like you cloned the drive. Yes? Plug the external drive in, go to
Windows Button > Right click Computer > Manage > Disk Management.
Select the external drive and right click and select extend volume.

To check your external drive plug the USB lead into your desktop and click on My Computer and your device will be list, right click on the device and click on Properties. This will show you the size of the drive and how much used space you have.

if you can see your usb but its not working

ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts

hope this helps

Missing memory

There could be several reason such as extra partitions etc.

Hard drive manufacturers manufacturers calculate space in the following manor. 1000KB = 1MB, 1000MB = 1GB. A 500GB hard drive has thus 500GB storage based of the above calculation.
The software calculate space differently, 1024KB = 1MB, 1024MB = 1GB.
The 500GB is calculated as follow: 500,000,000,000 / (1024*1024*1024) = 465.66 GB

External 500gb hard drive not readable

Check the partition size in Disk Management (if running Win7 - download a free Partition Manager if not) and see if the system is seeing the partition correctly. Seagate has recovery software available on their website but you may just have to repartition and reformat.
