Question about Kenmore 74173 / 74170 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Kenmore 253.78989801. Refrigerator stop cooling, then freezer gradually lost temperature. Melted ice buildup on coils by removing panel in freezer. Restored power. Fan in freezer works, I can hear condenser humming, but temperature inside is still hot after a day.

That's a good analysis. The refrigerator slowly lost it cooling capacity over a period of a week not all of a sudden.

If freezer is not cooling then the chance of frost forming is also out of question. So we need to start of by checking on the prrimary component, the compressor. Make sure the speed of the motor is humming welll or check the motor capacitor. Use a clamp tester to measure the current factor to see the load. If the pumping is low then check for gas pressure in the unit. If not you will need to check why the gas leaked check the leak with compressed air pumped in and monitored.for leak.
Only then recharge gas and seal.
Test the motor before gas filling to confirm the performance.

Hello, We have a Whirlpool Gold bottom freezer

I don't know about Whirlpool refrigerator freezers, but my Amana has a temperature control in the freezer that regulates the overall cooling, and then the control in the refrigerator compartment controls how much of the total cooling is sent to the refrigerator section. My advice would be to lower the temperature setting of the freezer, and see if the temperature lowers in the refrigerator as well. Also, you can go to the Whirlpool website and they can help you further.

Hi,
I'm Leo
This is a common defrost problem, The ice
is not being melted by the defrost system. he fan can't blow into ref.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check evaporator fan in freezer
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath

Hello\r\nI am trying to troubleshoot my Kenmore Refrigerator

If the coils are not icing up you do not have a defrost problem. Check that the evaporator fan is operating. Thats the one near the coil. You will need to close the door switch to see if it comes on. If it is working next check that the damper is opening this alows cold air into the fresh food section. Without the full model # I am not sure if your defrost thermostat operates the fan. Check the wiring diagram to see if the t-stat feeds the fan. If it does and there is no power at the fan replace the t-stat.The problem is likely to be either the fan or damper motor. After you taken the back panel off and see a lot of ice forming on the coil before you use your hairdryer you should locate the timer and turn the center of the timer manually into defrost cycle. If you can see or hear the ice melting then your problem is the timer defective. Change the timer and that is all. But if it doesn't do anything then you will need a little bit more on electrical knowledge to deal with the rest on defrost temperature control and the element itself. Hope this help, God Bless.

Refrigerator and freezer not cooling/freeding

Possibly a defrost circuit problem -

1) Bad defrost thermostat
2) Bad defrost heater
3) Bad defrost timer
4) Failed evaporator fan motor.

Look for frost accumulated inside the louvers at the back panel, top and bottom. If you see it, remove food from freezer and put in ice chest. Take out shelves, get hair dryer and warm the backside of the freezer, directing air down the louvers. Then leave to sit for 4-6 hours with the freezer door open. Put towels in the bottom of the freezer to catch any melted ice.
After period of time, plug unit back in and power the unit back up. Once you know it's cooling, empty ice chests back into freezer.

If there is a problem in any of the above components, then it will show up in 3-4 weeks witht he same problem again.

Kenmore coldspot not making ice, and not cooling in the bottom

Your refrigerator is frosted up. Remove the inside panel of your freezer. Defrost the ice out of the coils and check the heater and bi-metal. If both are good then your defrost timer is bad. If one is bad replace and you have it fixed. Good luck.
