Question about Canon PowerShot SD500 / IXUS 700 Digital Camera

Canon Digital IXUS 70, Camera Blank

Dear all,

Just this morning I took many pictures from my Canon IXUS 70, it was fine until suddenly blank images appears when I tried to shoot objects. It was definitely not because I pressed "DISP" button, because it's different. If you press "DISP" button, you will see that the LCD is completely off. In my case, it is not off, I still can see and choose the shooting mode, but the objects I wanted to capture did not appear. If I just try to shoot it, it was successful, a flash light would be fired. But when tried to display it, actually it was only the blank images. It seems that the shutter did not open.
I don't think I have a problem on my LCD, since I still can see existing images I captured before this problem occurs.
Can anyone give me ideas of what is going on?
Any suggestion?

Regards.

Yoelie

    Hi t00nz.
    Thanks for your response.
Yes, I can still take a picture but blank image only.
I am planning to submit it to Canon Service Center, since it is still under warranty.

    Hi All.
I have submitted my digital camera to Canon service center. Within 3 working days, I can collect my digital camera already.
It is working fine now. On the repair remarks, I can see "Replaced Optical Unit". It seems that the optical unit of my digital camera has been replaced. I'm not sure which optical unit is replaced. Maybe the CCD mentioned by t00nz is part of the optical unit.

My Canon IXUS 70 captures and displays just a black/blank screen. Do you have an idea why this happened? It seems that the shutter did not open. I have not dropped my camera ever and I have no idea why this happened. I was just taking pictures then the screen suddenly turned black. Please help. Thank you!

My Canon IS850 wouldn't auto-focus. The yellow light would blink (like if you're too close to something). I snapped the pictures anyway. They were garbage. Then after a day and swapping memory cards, the camera started auto-focussing properly. It made no sense.

Called Canon on my return, they fixed the camera under warranty by "replacing the optical unit". Sounds like CAnon is having problems

This really sounds like a potential CCD failure. To confirm, take a picture while the screen is black, then download to your computer to see if the picture is also black.

If so, it is difficult for the average person to replace a CCD, and should only be done by an authorized Canon repair rep. If still under warranty, Canon will fix this for you for free. If not, recommend calling Canon anyways and complaining (this should not happen in such a recent model camera). If you complain, and possibly ask to speak to a supervisor, you just might get lucky.

Flickering screen

Purple streaks, lines and casts across the recorded images are some of the first stages of CCD failure. A blank image will occur when the CCD completely fails. A blank image however is not to be confused with a blank LCD (998bills) where images are recorded OK but nothing is visible on the back, that fault requires the LCD to be replaced by a service centre. As for CCD's, this is a known fault and will most likely be repaired at no charge by Canon if taken directly to them. More detailed information about the CCD problem can be found on the website of your local Canon, as an example, Canon Australia have this page http://www.canon.com.au/support/customer/default.asp?DXI=KnowledgeBase/Customer/KBArticleForm&File=KB01634&productID=powershota80

If it also takes blank pictures, sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. Don't know if dropping had anything to do with it. But if it's a defective CCD, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status.
