Question about Olympus FE-180 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Red light, Won't focus, horrible loud wail noise.

I think I know what the problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I took my camera to the beach with me the other day. After about two hours, i come back to my camera, and when it opens, it makes this LOUD wailing beep, repeated tries to focus, and then just gives me a black screen. I turn the wheel, and the screen comes back on, only now, everything is blurry; so, i depress the button slightly, and it refuses to focus. When I try to zoom in, it turns off the camera. All the while, the flashing "thinking" light is red.

There MAY be sand in there gunking up the works... that's my only theory.
I've thought about opening up my camera, but figured it best not to, since I'll probably be unable to reassemble it.

How do I fix this without destroying my camera?

I took my camera apart and not a grain of sand. Replaced the batteries and visually inspected the sensor. Nothing is dirty. I as well took my camera to the beach. My camera sat in a bag in direct sunlight for about two hours, too. My only assumption is that the heat from the sun has "baked" the camera. Not going to further investigate the problem. Buying a new and better Olympus camera.

my wonderful Olympus just started the same thing today after many days at the beach. Loud beeping noise, won't focus, turns off automatically.

This is bad. I only had the camera for a year. Good thing I kept the old (you know, the kind you had to put film in) can't destroy it. Damn technology... it's going to ruin us all and pollute the planet.

If you love your camara bring it to a olympus dealer and ask them to check what the repair costs would be than uyou can decide to try it your self, buy a new one or let it be fixed.

Sand is always dangerous , it can come to vital parts where you don't want it to be.

cleaning yourself:

especially do not use a vacuum cleaner to suk the sand out, but , use enough light, a pair of steady hands, a box to fit in the screws (make a drawing witch srews where when) and take the time, use inside only a clean painters brush (thin) and wipe out any sand that can be seen, from the optics. than after cleaning assemble it in the reverse order of the disassembly , put all the srews in their place tighten them hand vast (not with a electroic tool but only by light force ) vast is vast (meaning it should use a light force to open the screw) and preferably use a dust free environment (rent a baby's box like in the hospitals used for very young childern)

but my advise would be advise nr 1: bring it back to the dealers

When I try to take a pic, the camera beeps and a red light flashes.

Hi. Based on your brief description of the problem I would think that the camera is failing to focus and the flashing red light in the viewfinder is the auto-focus indicator, make sure that the red auto-focus indicator is positioned in the centre of the viewfinder initially until you have experience of using it (to do this consult your camera manual) focus on a subject that has some contrast ie a red brick wall, grass or pebbles on a beach.

Ax550 won't take picture, shooting mode icon outlined in red.

you can try to format the memory card and then reinsert it to your camera again to try.

Check whether your camera is focusing or not. unless it focuses and its locked , the shutter wont get released.

it can be due to improper light or distance of the object, or even problem with your camera internally.

check if there is any noise while focusing,a jam can also cause such a result for some cameras.

Vg-120 wont open

I know this is just southern inginuity but ours did the same after a trip to the beach. my husband took a knife and removed the outer rim, to loosen the sand out, then we had to tape the ring back on. still works. but if you don't won't to damage your camera, you might not want to do it that way.

Loud whine/buzz/wail, nothing prints

Well your leader (lead head) could be jammed or off of its track. The leader should sit on a steel/aluminum rod and it should run under the front of the cartridge. If its gearings are out of sink you can get the cracking sounds you're describing and the whining probably the motor that powers the leader having no resistance and going way too fast for what it is supposed to do. I'd look for a broken sprocket or gear.

Can't get the camera to Flash

EXACT same problem. Tonight I tried to take a picture and heard a loud pop sound but I didn't think it was my camera... anyway it took the picture but didn't use the flash. Later, my sister went to take a picture with the flash and it made the same loud pop noise and now the camera wont work if the flash is on.
