Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

I have a Western Digital MyBook Essential 320GB and it is not responding. The green light is on, but the disk isn't even spinning. I've had this thing for at least 4 years. Is it toast? The harddisk will...

The disk-drive has malfunctioned.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service".
For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive,
just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

My external hard drive won't turn on

Ok, this just happened to me, my western digital my book studio external drive was not booting up, i could hear the disk spinning, but it would then cut out and the light on the drive was never turning on. i called Western Digital customer support and found out that the proper way to connect a drive is to plug in the power cable FIRST then the data cable. Also, with the My Book Studio Edition you should never have to press the power button, the drive just turns on when you plug it in. Hope this helps somebody...

Problems with Western Digital My Book World Edition

I have the same drive. It works great with windows XP but with Windows vista has difficulty seeing this type of drive and keeping the connection once it is established. Take it back if you have windows vista and then search for which 1TB drives work well with windows vista. It really has problems with windows vista 64bit. I was able to finally see the drive when I was using photoshop file/browse/network... then I dragged the shortcut Icon to my desktop and access the drive that way from that point on. Mine stopped completely tonight... I think the power cord went bad or something.

Western DIgital 500 GB litght flashes but not working

I discovered that the wrong power adapter was plugged into the Western Digital My Book which is why it was blinking two times a second and fried it. Plugged in a 24v instead of the 12vThe tech support person at Western Digital ignored the information of the blinking light. I fixed the hard drive issue by removing the cover (no easy task) and installing it as a slave drive on my computer. I am backing up that hard drive using another Western Digital My Book.

I would suggest to anyone who has the problem of frying their Western Digital hard drive to make it a secondary drive on your computer. My item was under warranty, but all they would have done is replace the product and not recovered the data. They gave me references on whom to send the problem hard drive to.

There are a couple of videos on youtube showing how to remove the cover. I wound up using credit cards and a DVD to pry it apart. I was fearful that a screwdriver could create noticeable tampering.

MyBook's power light is blinking, but not showing up on my Mac's desktop

Data recovery usually will cost about 2000 - 3500. i may be able to help as long as the platters aren't physically damaged. Send me the drive at your cost. I will pull all data and return data on burned dvds I keep the drive. If i can't retrieve data then i will return drive to you at my cost. [email protected]

Western digital my book 320gb not recognised

Try first disconnecting all USB ports and power plug for half an hour, this will get rid of eventual problems caused by electrostatic charges on usb channels.
If it does not work, this means that the virus has corrupted your Windows System, probably the root hub is defective.
In this case you will have to reinstall windows, either using recovery, from disk or partition, or using a Microsoft windows setup disk. Save all your data before reinstalling.

Not recognised malfunction

Sounds like your drive may be faulty with the rattling - if I were you I'd back up everything off it pretty quickly, then send the drive back to western Digital if under warranty. I wouldnt open it otherwise your warranty will almost certainly be void.

Suddenly stopped

Hi,

If the unit will not power on even with a new known good power pack, then it can be assumed that there is an electronic fault internally.

This of course would require that the unit be opened and voltage readings be taken. If you are comfortable working with electronic circuitry and components and use of a DVM, then it is possible to do the repairs yourself. Otherwise it would perhaps require you to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Additionally, if you are after retrieving the data inside the actual hard drive itself, there are two (2) possible ways of doing that by removing the actual hard disk from the My Book enclosure and:
1. connecting it to another enclosure or IDES/SATA to USB interface; or
2. connecting that HD internally in a desktop PC as either a Secondary Master or Slave.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
