Question about Toshiba Satellite A105 Notebook

1 Answer

Toshiba A105 occasional monitor failure.

Hi! Sometimes when I turn on my computer, my monitor will not power-up. I can hear my fan and cd drive running, but not my monitor. There also is not any sound either, so I believe the problem lies beyond the monitor. I hard reset and try to load it again and it'll work. However, the computer will freeze after awhile for no reason. I'm not sure what the problem is and I would like some guidance as to what steps I should take to diagnose this problem. Thank you.

Ok, so I tried using the pencil raser to clean the contacts and there was no progress. I only had 1 ram so I removing that wouldn't help. I bought more ram also, and the problem persists. Do you have any other advice for me?

1. remove the memory and using a pencel eraser, clean the contacts and put them back in. see what happens

2. if problem persists, then try removing the ram (one ram at a time ) and see if there is any improvement.

The goal of this solution is to try to know whether you have bad rams or not. as base on the manifestation that you have indicated, its seems to me that you have a bad ram.

hope i was able to help you in anyway

    Question....

When you experience that the monitor goes blank, is it totally blank? or there is an image that is dim?

If totally blank... then your problem lies on the board already. you need to take it to toshiba or to any laptop service center.

if you can see a dim disply... then your problem could be the limit switch or the backlight or the inverter. this might require reinsertion of the cables and soldering skills already

Unit failed to boot and observe the followng; - No start-up display - No CMOS boot-up display - Hard disk clicking sound and OS won't start

Turn the computer off.
Disconnect the AC power supply.
Remove the battery.
Remove the disk-drive.
Reconnect the AC power supply.
Turn the computer on.
Put any "data" disk into the CD-drive.
Does it display the CMOS boot-up display?
Can you hear the PC try to spin that "data" CD, i.e., trying to "boot" from it?
If it works "better" without the disk-drive attached, the disk-drive is the problem.

PCs starts up, see green led next to power button and I hear the fan. I do not have video on my display. Not sure what buttons switch the monitor from internal to external monitor? Any other ideas would be...

Try pressing Fn + F2 key. You can also try to perform power drain. Take out the battery unplug the power adapter then press and hold the power button for 30secs. Put the battery back in then plugin in the power adapter then turn on the computer.

I have a toshiba satellite laptop the screen is black

Shutting the computer down could be done by holding the Power Switch down for 10 seconds, rather than unplug/no battery "solution". A blank screen is more often than not caused by the failure of the screen's backlight. Plugging an external monitor in the ext monitor port would verify the computer still works, and I am sure it does.

My laptop(Toshiba Satellite A105 - S2051) wont turn on with or without battery on a/c adapter. Adapter seems to have a charge but when i plug it in and try hitting the power button nothing happens. I do...

hi, this is tricky, as the machine does seem to freeze even before booting. the fan may have become stuck, use some compressed air with the fan inlet (bicycle pump may do) to clean out some dust.

wait some time and switch on again.
observe if the green lamps for harddrive and cd-drive light up.
if no, the computer does not boot up, it may be then that :

the fan is broke and laptop prevents overheat damage by not booting up(buy a new fan and replace it)

or the machine itself is broke
in either way, if the solution i provided did not help, i would recommend to see a technician!

good luck then

Scratching sounds coming from laptop

There is lint or small scrap of paper rubbing on the cooler fan.

Without disassembly, Blow compressed air into the exhaust port while power is off, this might dislodge the debris.

Otherwise you have to remove outer cover and clean out that way.

Toshiba A105-S101 freezes at start up!

I would first attempt to reinstall the software from the install cd. Your Toshiba support page is recomending a new BIOS upgrade. See below:

When you turn it on, do you hear any activity? Motors start working, fan spinning, etc…? Try to connect an external monitor and start the laptop. Check if you can get any video on the external monitor. If the external monitor is dead too, try to remove the battery and start the laptop from the AC adapter. It also might be a bad memory module or a bad connection between the memory and the motherboard. Try to reseat the memory module, move it to the second slot. If you have two memory modules, try to remove them one by one and turn on the laptop. Also, try to remove the hard drive and see if you can boot it to Toshiba screen without the hard drive installed.

There is no special button to reseat the BIOS settings. To do it, you’ll have to access the BIOS using F2 button on the laptop start up, but as you have no video, you cannot access the BIOS and set it to defaults.

Sounds like GPU failure. unfortunately its nigh on impossible to replace without replacing the whole board which can be expensive. I saw a few on ebay for around £120.
