Sometimes, bits of food get behind the microwave generator mica cover and cause this EXACT problem they short out the microwave energy and spark. . It is NOT broken but DONT let this happen for more than a few seconds. !!!! You will see the Mica (looks like plastic) cover from inside the oven and will be on one of the sides. It looks oblong normally, It is actually transparent to Microwaves and is how they get from the generator in to the oven. Give it a real good clean around the edges or better still take it out to clean. and it should be fine

When using the oven tonight, i saw sparks coming from the plasic clip on the right that holds the rack up. i tried again later and still hearing crackling/sparks. is it possible to replace that...

Yes it is possible to replace the plastic clips. However thats not the problem. The problem is exposed metal under the plastic clip. Remove the clip and you will see it. You need to sand it down so that it is smooth, then use ceramic paint to cover up the exposed metal. You should check under all 4 clips to be safe. Clips are a little tricky to get out, just insert a screwdriver on either side and pry gently.

I have a GE JE1860SH04 cabinet mounted microwave oven. Intermittently, what appears to be sparks appear behind a platic cover in the right hand side panel. I think behind this panel is the magnatron,...

there should be a way to access the area to look at it closer, probably will be able to see some kind of flash mark{black burnt look} were it has been sparking.this should give you an idea of what the problem is.guessing it"s a wire coating problem or short

The oven sparks and gives a loud hum during use with plastic food containers. This scares my wife and mom terribly. I have an Emerson 900W microwave oven (model:MW8999SB).

It seems as though the container has a small amount of metal embedded in it ... don't assume just because it is plastic you can put it in the microwave.
Tip ... put just the plastic container in empty and try it. If the plastic get hot then it's the wrong type plastic for a microwave

Emerson MW8102SS - Sparks and No Heat

The magnetron tube which makes the microwaves is behind that cover plate, and it has gone bad. It is a replaceable part, but it's not worth the cost. Part and labor would be more than a new oven. It's time to treat yourself to a new oven.

I'm not familiar with the particular model, but having had a look at the Kitchen Aid website, it would appear that the KMCS1555 series are countertop models, and all appear to have the oven controls on the right-hand side. Is this how your is?

If this is the case, then that is where I would expect to find the magnetron. It is unlikely to be on the other side as the housing does not appear to be big enough to accomodate it.

As for it being under a panel, that is exactly where I would expect to find it. The microwaves cannnot pass through the metal of the oven compartment, so through the plastic panel is the way they get in.

This is what a typical magnetron in a domestic oven looks like:

(Although yours might look different, the clues are the cooling fins and the high-voltage connection)

You might want to have a look inside yourself and see if this is what is behind the panel.

Microwave (inside on right hand side wall) has a plastic cover. Behind this cover while popping popcorn there was bright yellow/red flashing/light, it started to melted the plastic cover within seconds....

You don't say which make/model microwave you have, but on every model I have ever seen the thing that sits behind the plastic cover is the magnetron - the bit that actually generates the microwaves.

Unless the microwave was a fairly top-end model, you might well be cheaper to just buy a new one.

Hope this helps,

Matt
