Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. You can try your local Kirby vacuum dealer or to contact the Kirby factory that I will list for you below. The vacuum is over 25 years old and if someone would have an old owner manual for the item they would have to make a copy of the old Kirby 1-CR vacuum, or stop in to a vacuum shop and they would be able to assist you in what the items are for the accessories or attachments. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

G4. Why does it only seem to have suction with the hose detached?

Hey, this is Jeremy with Crucial Vacuum,

I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Kirby G4. It sounds like your problems might stem from one of two areas:

1) Your hose may not be attached properly and allowing for air to enter the hose at the point of attachment.

2) The vacuum bag may not be properly attached to the hose connector.

Below I have attached a link to the users manual for the Kirby G4. You should refer to page 9 and 20-21 to view the diagrams pertaining to my suggestions.

How To Attach Carpet Shampooer To Your Kirby Generation 4 (G4) Upright.

Hello,

This is an excellent, easy to follow video presentation of attaching the carpet cleaner to your Kirby Generation 3 Upright Vacuum Cleaner. Please note that the model being used in the video is a newer model named the Sentria, but the process of attaching the carpet extractor attachment is identical on the Kirby Sentria and the Kirby Generation 4. The only major difference is that the Generation 4 does not have the lever that extends out to turn the belt to off. On the Generation 4 this is dont by turning the entire white square with the Kirby logo on it in the front of the vacuum cleaner.

Please feel free to ask for a repair clarification if you have a question on how to attach the carpet shampooer. I'm always, more then happy to answer any follow up questions there may be.

How do you put on the attachment hose to clean stairs

Assuming the rug nozzle is currently attached, lift up the headlight hood. Twist the belt lifter (black plastic square) on the rug nozzle counterclockwise to remove the belt tension. Then pull the accessory lock up until the rug nozzle comes loose of the Power Plant. You will notice two hinges at the bottom that hook on the the Power Plant's attaching bar. Gently lift up the rug nozzle to unhook it from the attaching bar.

Now your Kirby is naked. You will notice two small hooks on the hose attachment--hook them over the attaching bar, place the end of the hose attachment firmly against the Power Plant, then push the accessory lock down to clamp the hose in place.

You are now ready to use your Kirby with the hose attachment.

Not sure about the parts and what they do

Hi There,

First for your Shampoo attachment, all Kirby generation models came with this carpet shampoo attachment. It really does do a nice job at cleaning carpeting and rugs. In terms of how you use it, here's two links for you, the first is written instructions on how to use it, and the second is a video that shows you how to attach it to your Kirby and use it. In the video it's actually the Kirby Sentria that they use, but the procedure on converting it from a vacuum into a carpet cleaner are the exact same for the Sentria as they are for your G5.

Written Instruction Manual For Kirby Carpet Shampooer

Video Instructions On How To Install & Use Kirby Carpet Shampooer Attachment.

Now in terms of the other part that you were asking about. I believe the part your asking about is called the Intake Guard. I think this is the part that you're asking about, here's a picture of the Intake Guard:

979c8e0.jpg
The Intake Guard is connected to the front of the machine only when you want to convert your Kirby from a vacuum cleaner into a blower. This protects anything from going into the fan while it's being run, as well as pushing the safety switch that allows the machine to turn on.

I really hope that this information was helpful to you. If you have any follow up questions, or need further help with your new Kirby G5, please don't hesitate to add a comment here on the Fixya repair page, and I'll be more then happy to answer any and all of your follow up questions.

If you found my repair helpful to you, please be so kind and rate my repair helpful, or leave feedback. This is greatly appreciated by the Fixya community.

Thanks again,

I have a G4 and the plastic at bottom of bag is cracked

Hi There,

Well sort of. For the G4, the bottom boot is sold with the internal fill tube that inside of the outer bag, where the paper bag connects. These two parts are sold complete as an assembly already put together. You'll just need to take off the strap at the bottom of the boot that holds the outer bag onto the boot. This strap is sometimes difficult, and sometimes it's easier to just purchase a new strap and install it.

Here are direct links to the parts that you'll need on our website:

Kirby G4 Mini Em-Tor with Fill Tube Assembly. Kirby Part # 199493S

And here's the bag strap that you may just want to purchase so you can just cut the old one off:

Kirby Vacuum Bag Clamp. Kirby Part # 196599S

If you have any questions about how to change this part out, please feel free to open a new repair, or just use the comment field here on Fixya. If you found this repair helpful, please follow the Fixya way and leave feedback for the repair. This is really appreciated when someone answers your repair questions, and is what keeps repair professionals continue to post free answers rather then just the paid ones. Thanks again,

Th end of the shaft that come from the motor is worn out, and won't hold the belt well. How do I change it?

Hello,

Thanks for the clarification. I have never seen this problem previously in a Kirby. I wonder if the belt keeps sliding off because it's been stretched out? After about 1-2 years, the belts on the Kirby will stretch out to a point where there can possibly slide off the motor shaft. Have you tried just replacing the belt on the unit first?

If you're sure that it's not the belt that may be stretched out, and you'd like to replace the motor shaft, you certainly may do this. The only problem with this is the motor shaft is not sold by itself as a separate part. The only way to purchase this motor shaft is to purchase the entire fan assembly, which includes a new fan, and the hardware necessary on the fan assembly.

Here's a parts diagram that shows you the motor shaft is sold only in a completely assembly:
http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/vacuumcleanerbacgs/kirby-generation-parts-diagram.pdf

If you haven't already purchased the motor shaft, here's a direct link to the motor shaft and fan assembly on our website:
Kirby Generation Fan Assembly With Motor Shaft and Hardware

In terms of installing it, we've actually recorded a video repair on how to replace the fan assembly, which involves removing the motor shaft in order to get the fan off. Since you have to purchase the fan assembly anyways in order get the motor shaft, you may want to go ahead and replace your fan assembly at this time also. Even though your fan may not be broken, on Kirby's the fans can become coated with dirt and fine dust, which can sometimes lead to the Kirby exhausting a bad smell. If you'd rather not replace the fan, you may remove the motor shaft without disassembling the entire machine, you'll just need to secure the fan somehow so that the fan doesn't spin while you're using a nail to turn the motor shaft off.

Anyways, here's the video repair that we recorded. I hope that this helps you. If you found this helpful, please kindly rate my repair helpful by clicking the thumbs up icons in the top right hand corner of the repair. This is really what keeps Fixya repair professionals continue to give free repairs online.

Kirby ultimate G My belt broke & sucked into my sweeper & got stuck. My husband had to take it a part, he go out the belt but the accessory lock now is striped. Can that be replaced? Have you ever heard of this?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Yes, the accessory lock can be replaced but it may be part of the actual vacuum head of which could be expensive, it may be molded onto the vacuum head and would be replaced. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
