About 2 weeks ago my monitor suddenly started shutting off. The rest of the computer is still running. It only does this when the power cord is plugged in. If it is running on the battery it works fine until the battery runs down. I downloade an update for the video driver and bought a new battery. Same thing.
You should download and install the software for your computer model that controls the functions like increasing & decreasing screen brightness, switch between screens etc. Try reinstallimg the OS using the recovery CD ROM that came with your computer

Is it overheating? Is the fan and vents clean and allowing sufficent air flow? Was it left unattended and shut down? If so change Power settings to High Performance, change Sleep to Never, Change Hibernate to never. I don't know your OS to give detailed info.
First thing I'd check is for a BIOS update for your computer under the Acer support pages (acer.com). In some cases, thermal control updates are included in newer version of the BIOS, if it is a manufacturing problem.
Goto http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php and download Hardware Monitor, start the computer and immediately run the hardware monitor app to check how high the temperature on the CPU gets before it shuts down.
Continuing use under this condition may damage your Windows installation because of the sudden shutdown.
My Wife's computer started doing this for about a week or two, then all it did was keep trying to boot, nothing on screen, all lights come on. Seems there is an issue with certain models of compaqs and Hp laptops. If yougo to their website and chat with a rep, you may find you have one of these models they are giving a one time free fix, even if out of warranty.
They have ours right now.
usually shut down when idle(idle means no key or mouse activity).........left click mouse in any space on desktop, select properties,in properties window select screensaver and lower in the screen youll see power settings..select it...in power schemes change time best suited or select never.
