How can you tell if you're fuelpump or relay is bad on a 93 chev cavalier


easiest is chevy pumps hum and relays click so turn key on and listen should hear click and then a slight hum when pressuring up --no click can mean relay bad or over heated but tech way is remove relay and test with a meter or use another [same number relay]matching relay and turn key and if starts relay bad no start check the pump for power possible bad harness wire or connection or pump bad

Fuel pump does not come on when you turn the key to on but it comes on when you crank on it. Any suggestions what to check ?


Try a new fuel pump relay. It should be under the hood in the relay/fuse block. Relays only seldom go bad, so if not the relay, maybe the wiring to or with the relay. Try this: hold your finger lightly on the relay, while someone turns the key to on,not start. If you feel a click, the "coil side " of relay is good. So the problem may be with the power side of relay-either relay is bad or the power feed is missing. If you have a test light or voltmeter, you could test for power at one of the relay's terminals. One terminal should have power at all times, so key could be off, pull the relay, and check for power. If one terminal has voltage (battery voltage), and you felt the click, probably a bad relay. If no power to the relay, key off, then check the fuel pump fuse. The feed for the pump is missing.
If you do not feel a click from relay with key turned to on, either relay is bad, or the signal from the computer to relay is missing, or the ground for the relay's coil side is bad.

Replaced a bad cooling fan relay. Worked for a day then relay stuck the fan on.


probably bad relay... smack it to see if it'll stop

otherwise it's a wiring problem then if you ruled out the relay is working properly by testing the relay itself

Lowbeam headlights, power windows, and power lock don't work. Also have a clicking sound under dash now.


Clicking typically comes from a relay. Low voltage causes relays to chatter (click). The low voltage could be because of low battery or a bad connection to the relay. The relay could be bad itself. Find out where the clicking relay is and see if you can swap it with another one in the vehicle temporarily to see if the symptoms change. if they do; the relay is bad. If not, you will need to find the bad connection, unless your battery is bad.

No high beams in 08 montana sv6 bulbs and fuses are good


likely the dimming relay bad follow wires back to a small box (relay) with connections. Most likely not working properly an needs to be replaced, otherwise the connection from diming switch on stearing column is bad or the switch is bad or the wire from this switch to the dimming relay is bad. you may be able to jumper from the battery to the relay to see if the relay is ok. it is known as a flipflop switch so momentary power causes the relay change position from high to low beam and back.

Parking lights stuck on


the park lamp relay is stuck on. its bad or the control to it is bad.
hazards next.
ok HAZ does glow park to park is a red herring.
the HAZ relay is stuck on, or controls to it are bad
the BCM 100% controls hazard at all times
the BCM gets and input from you , that you want HAZ and then closes the relay/
the HAZ switch ground pin 18 on the BCM, it not 12v here the switch is bad.
IF NOT< bad switch input the HAZ relay is bad.

Dash Fuse Box , fuse 7 is haz. and the relay is there.
replace the relay or the switch,
if you unplug the relay the haz will die.
i bench test relays and am not , doing that here.

Car horn not working


as with all elect. fails check all fuses
in this case the 15 amp fuse marked, HORN
can i presume all else works good> car drives.?
all answers, USA spec car. nobody ever tells location, so..... if not USA< all answers wrong. the usa car has just 1 horn.....
got voltage to horn? 12v
Yes or no.?
if yes horn bad.
got voltage from horn relay
yes, bad wires.from, relay to horn
no, got voltage 12v to horn relay coil,
yes, good, no bad fuse.
got 0v to other relay coil (all tests honking)
yes, bad relay.
no, bad horns switch.

if you want me to guess. sure.
1: bad wires ../connections, end to end.
2 bad horn
3: bad relay
4: bad horn switch.

I do not get any electric power on the feul pump, i have tried to activate the emergency shut off valve but still no power. i have taken electrical messurment at the switch but there was no power either.


Hello, You should have a fuelpump Relay in the Powerbox under the hood. The power goes through this Relay, then it has a fuse in the fusebox inside the car, and the Inertia sensor is next and then the fuelpump. If you have no power going to the Inertia switch, then you may have a bad fuse or a bad Relay.

Check with Autozone, Oreillys, or Advance autoparts for the correct Relay. Ford uses the same part for several jobs and you need to replace the bad Relay. Sometimes you can just switch identical Relays to find the bad one. Autozone is pretty good for having diagrams. A bad fuse would mean something went bad either on the Relay side or the fuelpump side of the fuse.

Compressor kicking on and off now not anything


Make sure you have 120volts at relay if not jump out thermostat if it starts to run and stays running Replace the thermostat. If you have 120volts at relay and it is not running or it's kicking off and on replace Start Relay/Overload but a bad compressor can make a Start Relay go bad so if you have the same Prob. after replacing Start Relay/Overload Compressor is bad

Fuel problem on my 1998 Camaro


Check for a bad connection to relay. relays shouldnt just go bad after you keep replacing them seems like it would be a bad connection for the relay and when you replace it you move the connection in the fuse panel. find wireing scehmatic just jump the power for the fuel pump directly to power and see if it works if so examine that you have power from the ignition switch and a ground to energize relay and that power is good on feed side of relay.
