Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

1 Answer

Incorrect metering I have a Nikon D40x. About every 100 or so frames that i take, there is a problem with the Nikon Metering system. It incorrectly chooses the Aperture and Shutter Speed. Outdoors, it sometimes overexposes pictures. Indoors, it makes them very dark or black. Should i take this in to get it fixed? I have extended warranty...Alas, this is an intermittent problem. Thoughts?

I have the same problem. Using the manual modes doesn't help.

It may be a problem with the camera, but you should be using the manual modes....they are much more accurate. if you are worried about it being a defect issue, then send it in.....

I have one also, and have found it to be a bit slow on the metering side on the pre-programed modes.....

How do I get it to work? I have a Nikon D40x and have just bought a macro extension tube. When I turn on the camera it says that no lens is attached. I have a 18-55mm lens attached at the end of the tube...

Turn the mode dial to M for Manual. You'll lose all through-the-lens metering capability, so you'll have to review your pictures or else use another light meter.

My meter won't work even with new batteries?

I have Nikon EM myself and I have an issue with meter myself. First, the camera won't start metering unless your film counter is at 1 position. So, you have to advance couple of frames in order to have the camera start metering. Second, my unit will show metering information when I press the shutter half way IF I have not advanced the film to the next frame. As soon as I advance the film and ready to take the pic, the meter needle drops and won't show any information. This is caused by the aperture arm of the camera dropping a little bit from it's initial position as soon as you advance the frame. Funny thing is that the camera will continue to meter and make correct exposure, just without the information displayed.

Nikon D40x Metering Problem

I assume this is no longer under warranty.
This more likely to be a case of not pointing the camera correctly when pressing the release if for example you press the release firmly and dip the camera down in so doing it will register a shadow the camera moves up on exposure and you get a burned image.
Try various experiments in the mode see what happens.
As regards a repair it is likely the cost would be as much as or more then a new replacement

Nikon D40x Metering Problem

the meter should turn on as soon as you half press the shutter. otherwise remove the lens and try cleaning the electrical contacts on the lens and on the camera body.use q-tips dipped in very light spirits of alcohol, make sure you dont leave any debris around the area. caution with the camera's sensor.
