SOURCE: my external hard drive is corrupt, i want my data back.

Dear,
Data can be recover but the drive must be accessible by OS. As you write windows vista says drive is not accessible and that the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.Do one thing try the same drive at another PC. If it run on that PC copy the data to that PC. Now format the drive and paste the same data back to your drive. But, if same thing happend then there are chances of fault in the driveand for this you shuld visit to the service cetre but, they are not responsible for the data.

Thanks & regards,

SOURCE: My DEll PC runnig XP SP3 cannot

Hi,

Yes the drive is compatible with XP. I have seen a slightly higher than normal # of problems with their 1TB models so this may just be a batch problem. My suggestion if there's nothing crucial on the drive is to return it an purchase a different brand.

If it's not returnable you'll have to settle for asking Buffalo for a replacement. If there's crucial data on it you will need the help of a recovery pro. In that case, comment back with your Country, State and City and I will point you to a nearby Recovery facility.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

SOURCE: External hard drive not recognized

Some of the externals have mapping issues in Windows.  Although the TB shows in devices, you may need to remap it (right click on My Computer for mapping options) and in some cases, changing the drive letter will fix your problem.  There's really no 1 definitive solution for these.  If you're unable to fix the problem by remapping or changing the drive letter, you can partition the drive to recover your data.  As far as the slow transfer rate goes, almost all externals are formatted in FAT.  This has issues of its own with safely removing devices and slow transfer rates.  I prefer to format my externals and flash drives in NTSF for more reliability.  Best of luck.

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

Tip

Make a back up of your music on an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive

Copy iTunes folder to your external hard drive
To copy all the items in your iTunes library (including the iTunes Library file that holds all your playlists, playcounts, ratings, and other data) to your external hard drive, follow these steps:

Quit iTunes.
Locate your external hard drive.
Mac: On the desktop or Finder sidebar.
Windows: In My Computer
Locate your iTunes folder:
By default, the iTunes folder is located in:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\
If the iTunes folder is not in the default location listed above then you can find where the iTunes folder is located by following these instructions:

Open your iTunes Preferences:
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
Click Advanced.
The location of your iTunes folder will be listed in iTunes Media folder location box, as pictured below.

Drag the iTunes folder to your external hard drive. This can take a while if you have a lot of items.

When the transfer is complete, your iTunes Library will have been successfully copied to your external hard drive.

My WD My Passport external Hard Drive ! TB formatted for Mac is not reading my files

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
The fix.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.

If you're on a mac, then you should open disk utility to try to mount the drive manually. You can do this by selecting it on the left side of the window and clicking the mount button on the top of the window.
if you're on a pc, then try unplugging the drive from everything, and plugging everything back in. There are many manual and recovery utilities online

My system doesn;t boot up and I don't have the CD to boot up my system. When I brought the powerbook G3 it didn't with the CD. Please where can I get it from? I am in Ghana now. Thanks Ishmael

If you have another Macintosh that is working correctly, you can copy the contents of that hard-drive, including the Operating System onto an external hard drive.
To do this, install Carbon Copy Cloner on the working machine and plug in an external hard-drive. Then run Carbon copy cloner and make the source the computer's hard drive most likely named "Macintosh HD". Then choose to have your external hard drive be the drive where all of the data is copied. Then run the program and let it copy all of the files.
Once this is done, remove the external drive from the computer and plug it into your G3. Turn on your G3 while holding the Option (alt) key and then double click on the hard-drive image that is named whatever your external hard-drive is named.
Once your system boots up from the external hard drive, run Carbon Copy Cloner again and repeat the process again except have the source be your external drive and have the internal drive in your G3 be the disk that has all the data copied to it. Once this is done, turn off your computer, remove the external drive, and then boot up your computer again.
You will have an exact clone of the computer that you copied the data from and will just simply need to adjust the account settings as such as you see fit.

The external drive process can be skipped if you have a firewire cable. Simply connect the firewire cable to both computers and when you turn on your G3, hold the "T" key. This will turn your G3 into an external hard drive and you just have to carbon copy the files straight to your computer's internal hard drive.
If you do not have access to another computer mac computer, then you will need to go to the Apple Store and see if the Genius Bar can install the default operating system that your computer came with.
If for some odd reason you have the contents of an Mac OS install disc copied onto a flash drive or external hard drive, you can boot from that and use it in place of a disc.

congratulations on switching to mac!plug the external hard drive back into the PC, and copy the photo's to the PC, now plug it into your mac and go to applications-utilities-disc utility, the external drive should be listed on the left, click on the erase tab, at the volume format select "ms-dos file system", then click the erase button, this will erase everything on the drive and set it up so your mac can use it (but its ok because you moved all your pictures to the PC) now you can go back to the PC and copy the pictures on the external drive and it will work with your mac.

I have a 230 gb FreeAgent Go external drive.

    Hi,

I think the solution that meeknotweak gave is a little bit twisted. First and foremost you can not be able to format a 230gb hard drive as a FAT or even FAT32 simply because that FAT and FAT32 is only set to be used and can be used only if your drive is less than 40gb. If your drive is larger than 40gb then the only option is to format it using NTFS.

Second you can be able to format and set the volume format of the drive under the ERASE tab of the DiscUtility on Mac. Not in "RAID" tab.

This is the right way to do it......

If you plan to use the external HD into a PC or Mac, you should first plug it into a Mac Computer and format it using the Disc Utility. Choose the Erase Tab and select Volume Fomat. Make sure that you choose MS DOS. Only Mac OS can format a drive of any size to a FAT file system. If you have already formatted it you can now be able to use it vice versa.

One more thing if the HD is formatted as NTFS, Mac OS can read it but can't write on the drive. So that's why you need to make it as a FAT so that it would be readable and writable to both OS. Also make sure that the folders and files that you're transferring into the HD doesn't contain special characters. Mac OS can recognize those special characters on a file but windows can't.

    I hope this clarifies everything.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

    Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.
