Question about Fantom Titanium II (TFD500C16) 500 GB USB Hard Drive

1 Answer

How do I fix the following error with my FD 1TB - Titanium II - "F:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." This seemed to happen after I defraged my internal C:\ drive a couple of times... Not sure if it is a coincidence. I have deleted the F:\ drive driver and allowed plug and play to reinstall a new driver copy, but this did not help. The drive seems to work as usual, lights flash, it buzzes and humms as usual on computer startup, but it cannot be accessed. How can I repair this problem? I went through the Microsoft trouble shooting procedure, but I don't have another computer to test the FD TII 1TB out on to see if it is a bad hard drive, or some other component is bad. The drive is only 2.5 years old. If the drive is bad, can I still recover my files from it? Is there any free file recovery software available that you recommend that will do this for me? Thanks in advance for the help. Brian

Well, it's not a big effort to find another computer around these days, so if you really care about the drive contents, make that effort and try it on a different machine.

If it doesn't work there as well, you have to attempt data recovery. I would advise referring that to a specialized service, or at least to an experienced person, as using random data recovery tools may make the problem worse, and lessen the chance of recovering the data by involuntarily further corrupting it.

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

Hello,
The file or folder could get corrupted due to improper turning off the PC like abrupt power cut
without an UPS backup and various other reasons.Unfortunately there is no guaranteed way to fix the
corrupted file/folder,but there are few things you could try that fixes the issue sometimes.

1) You can ask windows to check for errors and fix them. This may fixe the corrupted files or folders in some cases.Follow the steps below to run the error checking process.
  1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
  2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
  3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
  4. Use one of the following procedures:
    • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
    • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
    • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer? Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
Like I said there is no guarantee this would fix the issue but its worth the try.The only way to keep the folders or files safe is to make backup copies on another hard drive or CD/DVD.Do let me know if it helped.

Thanks for using Fixya!

File or directory corrupted and unreadable

The directory is like a "table of contents" in a printed textbook.

If a child's crayons have been used to overwrite those pages, making them unreadable, then the table of contents cannot be used to locate the starting page-number of a specific chapter. So, one must read through the whole textbook, page-by-page, looking & trying to recognize the start of a chapter, and then the end of the chapter.

Similarly, there exist "file-recovery" computer software programs that do such "linear" reading of the entire ZIP disk, and trying to reconstruct the "file-structure" that was recorded in the "disk-directory".

Search for "file scavenger" software, and give it a try.

maybe - just maybe - if you plug it into your computer and then, if a mac, do the 'get info' bit and look for the info regarding if a file or device is locked.
