Question about Carrier 36KCARMS Air Conditioner

I have a carrier unit 38brc030320, I am replacing the fan motor and need to know the wiring order from the fan motor to the capacitor and compressor.

Out door unite fan moter not ranning .


The first thing, turn off power to the unit to prevent damage to the compressor. Check to see if fan turns by reaching a small stick in to see if it rotates freely, if not the fan will need to be replaced. If it does rotate freely, and just recently turned off, there is slight possibility of overheating of fan motor and the dual capacitor needs to be checked and replaced. Another possibility is check to see if wiring has burned in two or a wire has fallen off connection. If you do not know how long it has been stopped, just changing the capacitor typically does not fix the problem because the motor can rapidly heat up and cause winding damage that is not repairable. In this case you will need a motor replaced. When you get it replaced make sure the tech installs a new capacitor with the new motor.

Hello, if the compressor is running then it is either a bad capacitor or bad fan motor, an easy way. To check is try to spin the fan blade with a thin object, if this gets the motor going the capacitor is bad if not the motor is shot.

My Carrier 43B00HP - 1 is not blowing cool air. The fan is working but the cool air isnt coming out. If you turn it on and leave it on for awhile it turns off by itself


Please check your compressor whether it takes correct amphs. Due to weak in capacitor and also less rpm of fan motor the compressor gets overheated and it turns the unit off. If capacitor weak change it. If less rpm on fan motor change fan capacitor or fan motor.

Outside unit fan does not kick on just hums and you can hear a clicking like a breaker kicking on and off.


thats a bad starting capacitor .. the capacitor is a metal rounded box about 3 inch x2 inch .. it has wires going into the fan and into the compressor .. its usually mounted near or on the compressor ... there are usually 2 capacitors in one container ..one for the compressor and one for the fan .. if the capacitor is bad then the fan and/or the compressor will just buzz but wont start .. the motor will get hot until a thermal breaker shuts off the power .. then when it cools it will turn back on and try again ... if you allow this to continue it can damage things ... the capacitors don't cost much .. you can remove your old one safely as long as power is turned off at the circuit breakers for the AC ... note where the wires go .. usually they have "pull off" connectors that are different sizes so you cant mix them up .. take the old capacitor with you to an air conditioning parts house . or get your AC make and model number and contact the manufacturer for a replacement capacitor.. you can also take all the numbers off the capacitor and order a replacement off the internet .. replace the capacitor and it should fire right up ... if you call a service man .. tell him that you suspect the starting capacitor .. that way he will bring a selection with him or he might have them with him anyhow but if he knows your make and model number then he can bring an exact replacement .. ..

Fan motor runs backwards


Make sure the capacitor is connected to the start lead, not the run lead(s). Also some fans come with some wires you can switch to reverse the direction. If your motor has them there will be 4 and the label on the motor will tell you how to connect them. Let me know if you need more assistance or if this helps.

Blowing hot air fan not turning outside making a humming noise


Replace the run capacitor. It is a silver cylindrical object located in the electical compartment of you outside unit. There is most likely three places on the top where different color wires are attached. One is marked F,or Fan. The center should be marked C, or Common, and the last should be marked Herm, with wiring to the compressor. Make sure you write down or label each wire you remove and it's correct location. They must be installed on the new part just like they were on the defective part. For you to know which dual run capacitor you need, the old one will have printed on the side either 370, or 440 v,as in volts. You must also need to know the microfarad rating and it is also printed on the side with the voltage rating. Since this is most likely a dual(runs fan and compressor) you should see two ratings abbreviated as mfd. Something like a 5mfd for the fan motor and perhaps a 35 mfd for the compressor. CAUTION !!! This device has line voltage and you must insure the power is off at the disconnect/ breaker BEFORE you begin the repair. Sounds complicated but really only takes a few minutes. The main thing is getting the right mfd and voltage ratings for the new part and keeping a record of where the wires were mounted on the old one, and putting them back the same place on the new part.

Chances are the capacitor is bad. Lets hope anyway right behind the control section is the capacitor it will be a dual one it runs the compressor and fan. First turn the breaker off for unit. access the capacitor make note of the wiring this is where it gets real difficult so many wires in a little space. make labels out of tape it you need to there are two sides to capacitor the fan should only have one wire going to fan side. remove the capacitor you can test the capacitor if you have volt ohm meter. Put in ohm's and check resistance on the fan side. If the meter goes up then down capacitor good. If it runs up and down reverse the leads from the ohm meter and repeat runs up and down. If that checks bad replace the capacitor. but other wise the Fan motor is bad and they are tuff to replace. Can be done but you have to undo the inner part from the outer shell and pulling the whole inside out. You will need long Allen wrenches. Have to remove alot of housing items. let me know what you check on capacitor. ken

Wiring compressor


The two terminal cap is only for the new fan motor. Connect the compressor wire back where you found it, on the 3 terminal cap. It's the terminal marked, "herm". The "common" terminal on the 3 terminal cap must still be connected to one side of the 220 power at the contactor. One side of the 220 goes to the common on the compressor. The other side of the 220 goes to the run winding on the compressor AND the common terminal on the 3 terminal capacitor.

Compressor not doing much


I am assuming that you are talking about a central ac unit. On a central air unit the outside fan must be running whenever the compressor is. If it's not the compressor will shut off from overheating withing minutes. First you need to shut off the unit for several hours and let it cool completely down. Then turn it on briefly to see if the compressor starts and see if the fan tries to start.( I am assuming the compressor starts and runs.) If the fan won't start try testing the capacitors. There are usually two one for the fan one for the compressor. Sometimes there will be one combo one. Mark the wires and remove the capacitor. Get it tested and if bad replace it. This will probably do the job. If not test for current at the fan motor. Also test to see if it turns freely. The motor may need to be replaced. This will run about $50. The capacitor should always be replaced when the motor is changed anyway.
