Replacing the Print Cartridge 1 Open the front cover, and then open the top cover by pressing the blue levers on both sides of the top cover. 2 Remove the old print cartridge containing the used ribbon and dispose of it. 3 Remove the plastic stopper from the new print cartridge. Sometimes you may see vertical streaks/black lines on the faxes you receive. Either your machine's primary corona wire for printing may be dirty, or the sending party's fax scanner may be dirty. Clean your primary corona wire. I recommend placing the drum unit on a drop cloth or large disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering toner. 1. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the tab from right to left several times. 2. Return the tab and snap it into the Home position, (Caution: If the tab is not at the Home position, printed pages may have vertical stripes). 3. Reinstall the drum unit into the machine. 4. Close the front cover. 5. Plug in the power cord first, and then plug in the telephone cord. or ask the sender to make a copy to see if the problem is with the sending machine. You need to open the front cover of the machine and remove the
cartridge (drum and toner) On the top right there is a tab that you
need to slide from left to right about 20 times, then bring back to
Make a COPY and see how the copy comes out. If you see the same black vertical lines that other people are seeing, then you probably have something like whiteout on the scan glass.
Open the fax top cover where you feed your originals, and then look inside for a piece of glass about 10" long by 1/2" wide. Then I would try cleaning the glass with rubbing alcohol and also go over it again with windex.
After cleaning the glass, try making another copy to see if it has improved. If it has, but still has more lines, then try re cleaning the glass.
Hope this helps.
I have the same problem. Found this solution on the Brother site: If the faxes you receive and the copies you make print half blank pages please follow the steps listed below:
1. Unplug the power cord
2. Lift the top cover up.
3. Next, lift the two purple release levers located on each side of the metal plate. The print head will pop up.
4. Remove the ribbon cartridge from the unit.
5. Lift the plastic paper cover (located behind the black rubber roller).
6. Carefully remove any paper that is jammed by pulling in an upward direction.
7. Push the paper cover down (located behind the black rubber roller).
8. Place the ribbon cartridge back in the unit with the ribbed triangle on the plastic casing furthest away from you. Make sure the cartridge gears rest in the white gear holders.
9. Gently push down the print head until it clicks into place.
10. Close the top cover securely.
11. Plug the power cord back in.
Test by making a copy.
1. Place a document (with text on both sides) in the ADF (automatic document feeder).
2. Adjust the paper guides on the sides of the ADF to fit the width of the document.
3. Press the COPY key.

go to page13-9 routine maintenance section, where it says to clean the glass strip on top of it there is a white plate (shown) does that plate have ANY dirt or spots etc......?
It MUST be completely WHITE or it will give you black streaks. if it cannot be cleaned then use white out to cover. ( makesure it is completely dry before using).
