New sata 500 gig hdd - ST3500320AS SD15

Hi,
New drive fitted as indicated to existing MB sata connection and power plug, Easy Peasy. Shows up in Bios ok. Booting up shows as IDE 3. No show in Explorer. Device manager shows a problem, missing file - xfilt.sys.

Where do I find this file? I have used my motherboard driver disk (MB recent upgrade with 2 sata slots) Loading it a a storage rather than a boot drive. Also used my XP Pro disk but still gets the message. Tried to find driver through device manager control search, also windows drivers tucows etc. Help Please.
derek,

I want to replace my 80 gb hard drive with a 500gb st3500320as and I have not found a way for my My XP computer to recognise the new HDD even though after a reboot the bios says it is there. This is...

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your "((MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE))" make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error even something as small as a faulty electrical extension or fan lead can cause this problem

computers need all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly

a motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail check all electrical power input and extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working

also check the Cmos battery and computer RAM modules make sure they are securely seated with no dust built up or in the sockets

hope this helps you

Installed 500 gig drive with Windows XP. Computer only recognizes it as 127 gig.

You need to go to your computer manufacturers support-driver site and look your model up, then put in your operating system and search for drivers. In the drivers column, you need to find the download for an updated BIOS. Download this file and run its self-executable program and flash your systems BIOS. The new BIOS will allow your system to see large hard drives...right now your system has a limit of 132 GB.

St3500320as bios not detect,i am using it as external hdd, once i used wrong power supply (original 12V, wrong 19V)and after that it was no detectable  in bios anymore, i can see some places on board...

I'm not sure I understand you correctly but this is what I think.
You tried to use the drive in an external case and the power supply was 19v. The drive really needs 12v. When you put it back inside a PC the bois does not detect it.

Id say it is destroyed. Do not wast you time with it.
If you think it is burned then it probably is.

Seagate st3500320as firmware sd15 not recognize by bios

You need to access the drive controller and reset it using an RS232 to CMOS convertor and hyperterminal. The problem is caused by the firmware on the controller software going into an infinite loop.
If bios is not seeing it then none of the software tools available will allow access.
Once the hard drive is reset, the disk is fully useable again. A firmware upgrade is possible at this point, but usually we just image the disk and load it onto a more reliable replacement as most customers do not want to experience that sort of fright again.
I have fixed a few of these and have the equipment to do it, but it is not really a task for the amateur.

Troubling in sata connection

  • I suppose there is a jumper(beside the power pin) on your new HDD,
  • if its true the your HDD supports 3GB/s mode but your motherboard does not .
  • So place the jumper on the HDD on 1.5GB/s combination.
then
  • Disconnect the 80 GB,
  • Connect the new HDD,
  • Boot from any bootable xp or vista or any disk tool like erd commander and try to format the new HDD.
  • Then connect the new HDD and boot from it.
Tell me what happened.

WD not turning

First enable the hard drive in bios if you havent already .Then if you have windows xp click right on my computer and select manage,it opens up computer mangement, then go to the tab called storage and on the sub menu of storage click disk management . You should see you 2nd/other hard drive (labelled disk 1 at the bottom if it is the second hard drive) make sure its your 2nd HDD ( Look at capacity in properties by clicking right on it) .Click right on the 2nd hard drive and select format press ok when the new window comes up and its finished.

Also any other ways that might help would be great to know, heres what i'm talking about! "Fixing The Drive NOTE: Commands for you to type are in red boldface. Pay attention to upper & lower case - it is important. Turn on power to the RS232-to-TTL adapter and the hard drive. After a few seconds, Press CTRL+z. You should then see a prompt like this: F3 T> If not, swap TX & RX wires. Access Level 2 (type /2): F3 T>/2 (enter) F3 2> Then spin down the (disconnected) motor: F3 2>Z (enter) Spin Down Complete Elapsed Time 0.147 msecs F3 2> Very carefully, remove the cardstock that you placed between the PCB and the drive head contacts.
