Question about Computers & Internet
The problem is likely not with you at all.
Yahoo & WinLive have been causing grief among a friend and myself as well. Yahoo has been having troubles just to try and get signed in.
Mobile Devices can sometimes cause false status reports unless you specifically choose to sign into a device, or sign back into PC (both on the pc side-yahoo). Don't know if you are using them or not, just be aware.
It is also possible that your friends, and yours, profiles got mixed up on the computer side. Try deleting each other, then re-add. You will likely lose the message history though.
I am sure that the problem lies with Yahoo though, just based on the number of problems I have personally with it.
