At what point do it mute itself? Is it during calls, music playback, playing a video? Does the mute option get enabled, can you immediately increase the volume or un-mute?
A generalised piece of advise is that a factory restore on most devices including phones can be quite quick and easy, if your are not worried about data stored on the device this can often be the quickest way to cure software issues.
Call your muted A747 from another phone.
Answer the call.
On your A747 select Options with the top left button.
Select the first entry, Mute/Unmute.
This fixed the same problem on my A747. Before doing this the Mute/Unmute had no effect. After doing the repair, all is OK.
To mute your phone during a phone call, unlock your phone and the top left button should have the option of mute. Also the right button will say options, click that and the first option is mute. do the same to unmute.
