Question about Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

My Panasonic E55 is having problems reading disks after I try to erase something on them. I erase without success and then it tells me the disk is unformatted. Also will not format disk after that. I did try cleaning it (wouldn't read the disk, but did have a little success... it would erase, but then would not record and said again it was unformatted). It has no problems recording on a previously recorded disk from which I did not try to erase anything.

Sorry this isn't a solution, but I just want to commiserate with you. I am having the same problem. I guess the problem started about three weeks ago. The recorder will not recognize any blank DVD-R discs and it only recognized 1 out of 4 new DVD-RAM discs. It would read most of my older DVD-RAM discs but would refuse to erase some of the old recorded programming. It also refused to recognize some of the older DVD-RAM discs, so in frustration I reformatted one. I was able to record and watch a couple of shows, but now it is saying "Unformat" for that disc.
About a year ago, the DVR gave ma some trouble and I was able to fix it myself. (I think it suddenly wouldn't power on, but I don't really remember if it was that or if it was a "SELFCHECK" error.) I had to open up the case and replace two capacitors. I bought the replacements at Radio Shack and my son helped me solder them on. My next step with this DVR will be to open up the case and look for any obvious problems. The worn-out capacitors looked oily and damaged, as I recall.

The panasonic dmr e55 will burn a disc from my video camera and play on the dvd player but no other dvd player. and i read all the instructions step for step

Have you finalized the disk after recording? Are you using DVD-R disks? Also, I can replay my recorded DVRs on my portable DVD player, but not on a TV with a built-in DVD player. That one is just to finicky.

"No Read" display...99% of the times.

OK. Since the laser cleaning disk could not be read I used a can of air (used for air brushing) and blew air into the disk opening. I thought I might clean any dust that may have collected around any parts that needed to be cleaned. This seemed to have worked. It is also possible that dust accumulated in an area that would not allow the disk to line up properly. This could explain why it worked sometimes. If this continues as a problem I will use the EZ17 only as a tuner for my EZ55.

How can i make Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD Recorder use 16x dvd-r discs?

It is possible that one of the available software downloads (especially from the Canadian website) might allow you to use 16x -R disks, but your choice may be limited by the disk burner already fitted. Try the Panasonic site for info and updates.

It is also possible that you are trying to record using an already used -R or an unformatted RAM disk.

DVD recorder continually stuck on a loop trying to read disk.

Hi again

Well done!

I am so pleased to hear that you have restored the DMR E55 and for taking the trouble to let me know. It's always satisfying to achieve something like that and I guess you'll get even more pleasure from using it now than you did before. They are good machines and well worth the effort to keep them going.

Thanks again and kind regards
