Canon 20 d 005 error with flash - Cameras

I turned on my Canon 20d today and when I pushed the flash pop up button it clicked 3 times and then the error 005 displayed in LCD on top of camera. Really disappointing! I generally don't use the camera daily or even weekly and it still looks new, its actually just over 2 years old. Wondering how much Canon will charge or should I use my Mack warranty? If this is a common problem it seems it should be covered by Canon techs. Any insight would be helpful.

I have a rebel d20 whenever I try to take a picture in the regular camera mode and it clicks three times and then the screen starts flashing "error 005" over and over. I don't know what to do because it works sometimes but as of late it has only worked in certain camera modes. The camer itself is barely a year old - Any suggestions guys?

This can be one of 2 things... either you are using built-in flash and its not popped up all the way, or you used flash on hotshoe and camera still thinks flash is on hotshoe. Known problem with microswitches on hotshoe sticking.

Error 05 en canon DS126071

Error 5 is a flash error, and indicates the flash did not pop up . Usually caused by impact to the flash (flash stuck) or sticky liquid spillage that acts like glue to hold the flash down (clean spillage with Windex on a Q-tip).

Built in flash dosen't pop up

5 error is a mirror return error.

The reason or this error message is that the mirror not is returning after a shot. To normalize the camera, a second press on the trigger button is necessary. 4. Note that all functions operate perfect, and the mirror slides smooth in its trace.

The 5 error often happens when using 3rd party lenses (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) which cause incompatibility problems. Were you using a non-Canon lens?

Also clean all contacts with a pencil eraser. Do this with your battery contacts as well and try fresh batteries.

Err 05 on Canon 7D

The error code is used to tell you the flash could not be raised. Check if anything is blocking the free movement of the pop up flash. First reaction should be, switch the camera off and then on again. Better though, after you switched off the computer remove the battery and charge it first, Then again try everything as before.
The manual says is the error persists, wroth down the error number and contact your nearest Canon Service Centre.

Error 99 is a generic error code and only Canon can diagnose it. But given that it occurs when the flash is set on, it must mean there is a fault with the flash circuit. You may need a technician to replace or repair the circuit. Alternatively, you could purchase an external flash if the first option turns out expensive.

Occasionally I get 'ERROR 5' appear on the display on my EOS 450D - it is suggested that the pop-up flash is being impeded, but I know that it isn't. What is happening?

This is a common canon mechanical error.

Most of there SLRS do this the release inside the pop up flash hangs either due to weak spring or release catch itself. If it hangs for even a split second you get error code.

Try This.
  1. Clean Flash Release & Apply wd-40 with a q-tip to moving parts. DO NOT SPRAY INTO CAMERA. Use oil lightly.
  2. Or Assist flash when it tries to p up by lifting on flash gently. Maybe one day canon will fix this problem.
PS this happens to even Brand new Canons.

Wanting to use add on flash

The "error 99" is a general error on Canon cameras meaning "something's gone wrong and I don't know what to do about it". If you get them all the time, the camera is effectively dead and must go back to Canon for a service repair (circa £175 if I remember correctly).

If the error 99 only happens when you try to pop up the flash, but otherwise the camera can take good pictures, then yes, an external flash unit could well solve your problem. With an external flash on the hot-shoe, the internal flash is completely bypassed and the camera will never try to pop it up.

I recommend taking your camera to a shop such as Jessops and ask to try out a flash gun to be sure.
