Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My RUUD UBHA 21J8SFGAI is not cooling my house like before. It runs almost all day and the house feels a little warm. I called an air conditioner repairman who told me that the compressor is leaking freon and oil from the bottom because the bottom 2 inches are wet. He said I needed to replace the compressor. He added freon the the unit and said it would cost around $700 to $2,500 depending on what needed to be replaced Can a compressor be fixed or do I have to replace it? The house is a little cooler now.

Compressors for household ACs are not repairable. Usually if a compressor goes bad, whole condenser unit is replaced.

Can you see the condition of the coil itself? If it is blocked this could be a cause for the frozen coils. Also, check the condition of the blades on the indoor fan. Dirt and dust accumulation on the blades reduces airflow.

Ruud achiever 10 froze up but the fan works but not getting cool air flow through house. what is causing this?

The most common things that will cause a system to freeze up are:
1. Dirty air filters
2. Dirty evaporator coil
3. Indoor fan motor not running
4. Blocked/restricted return air flow
5. Low on refrigerant charge ( most common)

I would start with the filters. When the system is froze up, turn off the "cool" and just have the fan set to on. Make sure there is no more ice anywhere, turn the system back on and check your air flow throughout the house. If it feels normal, then filters, return, and fan should be good. The outside unit will have warm to hot air coming out of the fan if the charge is good enough, but that's not a perfect way to check, you will need gauges and a temp reader with knowledge of super-heat and sub-cooling to check the charge the right way. Hope this helps and good luck!

Central air conditioning system is blowing warm air.

many, many. Is the outside unit running? If it is, is the compressor running? Feel the refrigerant lines leaving the unit. Little one should be warm. Big one should be cold, probably sweating.

It doesnt cool the house temrature down

It appears from what you say that both the indoor fan and the outdoor fan must be running. If so, you must check the compressor to see if it is running. It probably is not, but if it is, you are probably totally out of refrigerant due to a leak maybe.

Let the unit run for a couple of minutes and then feel the copper lines that are leaving the outside unit. The big one should be quite cold probably to the point of sweating. The little one should be warm.

Air handler motor stopped working

Check the capacitor before you replace the motor. It's a common problem that's easily fixed. Make sure the fan rotates freely.

RUUD UBHA-14 J11SFJA air handler. The fan (blower) doesn?t runs

Absolutely, however, you want to properly diagnose the reason why the fan is not running. It could be a less expensive part than the fan motor itself.
First, check to see if you have the proper voltage going to the motor. I believe your motor requires 240volts ac. If you do not have 240 volts, you have a control problem.......either the thermostat is failing to close R & G or your blower relay may have failed to close the contacts necessary for your fan to operate.
If you have the voltage, then you want try spinning the blower wheel with your hand. Does it spin freely? Is the motor warm/hot? If so, turn everything off for an hour or so. As soon as your energize it, try spinning the motor with your hand again.....if it spins freely with no resistance and then starts running by itself, the problem is the run capacitor (approx $20.00 depending on where you purchase it from). If there is resistance when you try to spin it, the problem is most likely with the bearings and you will need to replace the motor.......if you have to replace the motor, go ahead and replace the capacitor also, making sure it is properly "matched" with your new motor.

I hope you find this to be very helpful to you, moving forward. :-)

The inside RUUD AC unit has ice and no cold air is blown

it is likely low on coolant or as some say "freon" that or the indoor fan motor has not run properly. let it thaw completely by shutting it off and just turning on your fan switch from auto to the on positon. if you begin to feel air flow eventually you need coolant added b/c you probably have a leak from the system being old
