Everytime I put a disc in my xbox, it just says "open tray" instead of play game. movies don't work either.

Hi it sounds like your not far aways from the dreaded red ring of death, the fans working hard indicates the xbox is over heating really quick and the chances are the gpu and or cpu chip are over heating, now this over heating causes the heat sinks to heat up and these are close to the dvd drive and the heat transfers over and causes the problem you are getting.

now replacing the dvd drive may solve your problem but it wont last long as the over heating will cause the same problem in a matter of weaks

the best thing to do would be to pay someone to remove the x clamps and fit a more secure way of holding the hear sinks in place it will also need a full clean and new heat sink paste using so it is quite a big job.

i charge 25 pound plus parts and if the problem is just the heat sinks and x clamps then it works out to about 30quid but if you do need a drive then your looking at between 40 and 50quid to get it fixed, how ever you need to bare in mind that the damage could all ready be done and the cpu and or the gpu chip could have over heated and fried if this is the case then the unit is scrap and only worth spare parts but as your dvd drive is failing their isnt much else worth anything apart from the case and the fans and possibly the heat sinks depending on which circuit board you have.

shop around and see what prices you can get as it may solve the problem.
