Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I bought a used sony laptop, model PCG-7G2L. It had no harddrive or memory. I put in-new-a 320 Gig WD EIDE hard drive and (1) Gig of memory. I tried installing Windows XP. Nothing! The computer seems to turn on and you can hear the fan run and the battery is charged but the screen is totally blank. We hooked up another screen from a desktop and that remained totally blank. What gives?

Have you seen the laptop working before you bought it??
It can be either a memory mismatch (make sure you're using SODIMM Module(s) of DDR2/533Mhz) or that something else if defective with the laptop (usually the motherboard!)...

Anyway, try this:
Take out the battery and disconnect the laptop from any power source. Afterwards, press the power button few times repeatedly... Reinsert the power cable (only) and try powering up normally. If it powers up normally, shut down the computer, reinsert the battery - and try powering up again.

Something to think about: Do you know why the computer got sold? Do you trust the person/place that sold it to you? You might been given a defective product - just mentioning a possibility...

Good luck,
Pelu.

Power loss in external harddrive

Hi mjcole,
Couple things. What model WD drive do you have? Plugging the laptop adapter into the drive chassis may have fried the chassis. You can buy a new chassis and put your drive into it, or you can buy a new power supply in case the one you have has gone bad and you did not realize it. Not likely though.

The power requirements are very specific and the laptop power supply may have been to much for the WD drive.

1. Has anyone installed 2Gb RAM memory in a Sony PCG-TR3A? please give details of memory specification. 2. Has anyone installed a HDD bigger than 40GB? please give me details of HDD specification.

Hi,
You can only upgrade the memory to 1GB in that model Vaio laptop.

The memory supported is DDR SDRAM which runs at 333MHz. There are 2 memory slots which support 1x512 module in each slot.
I recommend Kingston RAM as the manufacturer.

As for the HDD the laptop supports EIDE (IDE/ATA) hard drive. you can have anything up to 320GB. Seagate are excellent drives as well as Fujitsu.

Regards.

Sony Vaio Laptop PCG 9U1M

PCG-K415B is the correct model number the label is possibly the service tage or something.

Here are the specifications of your laptop
  • Intel Celeron D Processor 345 3.06GHz / 533MHz FSB
  • 512MB DDR SDRAM - Low cost double memory Offer - call for details
  • 40GB Hard Drive
  • DVD Dual Layer Drive - To read DVDs and CDs and write CDs, DVD+, DVD- and large Dual Layer DVD
  • 15.4" XGA xblacklogo.jpg Widescreen TFT Screen
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 345M 64MB shared graphics
  • Integrated wireless 802.11b/g LAN - Call for advice on Wireless networking
  • Integrated 3-in-1 card reader –Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo

My guess is that the laptop is around 1 or 1and half year old as the celeron 3.06GHz is a relatively new processor.

I can't get the full capacity of 320 gig drive

the hard drive you bought is not compatible with your motherboard. I am pretty sure that your board is only compatible with IDE ATA hard drive. you can still use it as external hard drive though.
