i agree with you about the fire hazard and i had many feedbacks about this tv, mostly conscious about fire hazard too.
i would suggest that in light of owning a high-def tv, it would be significantly appropriate to place this in a room with airconditioning as to diminish the heat this hdtv produces.
about the issue of the hdtv turning off, if you suspect the transformer and other parts to be the reason for the tv to malfunction, why not bring it to a certified service center which handles GE hdtv. i would say that it may be a pain but as to think of the outcome, it may be worth it.
Leave the back off and try to power the set on...be ready to pull the plug. Whatever is sparking/smoking is your bad part. On this TV I would suspect the flyback transformer or grey rectangular polyester capacitor mounted in front of a heatsink on the left.
hi, where did u purchase the flyback and was it in an oem box with rca/ge or thomson consumer electronics written all over it ? most generic fly`s such as asti, crc, and hr diemen don`t work for **** in rca/ge tv`s, screen control is extremely fussy and must be set exactly or will do exactly what yours is doing, let us know, video-tek

this is called the flyback. if your technicaly inclined yes solder experence a must. this is and rca tv. you possible can find rca replacement parts. Recently i noticed a price reduction of this Board just depends on the exact model number. You will have to replace the Horizontal output transistor which ussally bad when this happen
It sounds like your focus/screen block, the flyback transformer, or maybe a CRT anode lead is leaking high voltage. This could be a serious problem, or could be a simple one. You should not attempt this repair unless you know all of the high voltage safety issues involved with this TV set. Good Luck
