Same problem! Same TV same purchase time. I was sleeping and all of a sudden..................sparks, smoke & now the TV won't power up. I had a repair man look at it and he's telling me it will cost around $350 or more to fix. Something abou the main power panel? Sounds like GE should do a recall!

Same problem. TV manufactured in 2004. Sparks, smoke, etc etc. I didn't have a TV repairman look at it, but I talked to one and he said about $300 to $400.

You need a new replacement flyback. They cost about 50 dollars at the following link , and they provide free tech support so you can do the repair yourself which takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and requires only basic soldering skills. Heres the link.

GE D52GW12 52 in. Rear Projection HDTV-Ready

hi

i agree with you about the fire hazard and i had many feedbacks about this tv, mostly conscious about fire hazard too.

i would suggest that in light of owning a high-def tv, it would be significantly appropriate to place this in a room with airconditioning as to diminish the heat this hdtv produces.

about the issue of the hdtv turning off, if you suspect the transformer and other parts to be the reason for the tv to malfunction, why not bring it to a certified service center which handles GE hdtv. i would say that it may be a pain but as to think of the outcome, it may be worth it.

hope this helps.

Sparks and burning plastic

Leave the back off and try to power the set on...be ready to pull the plug. Whatever is sparking/smoking is your bad part. On this TV I would suspect the flyback transformer or grey rectangular polyester capacitor mounted in front of a heatsink on the left.

I replaced the flyback and now I hear a high pitch sound as it tries to come on three times then has to be reset and does the same thing again! What now?

hi, where did u purchase the flyback and was it in an oem box with rca/ge or thomson consumer electronics written all over it ? most generic fly`s such as asti, crc, and hr diemen don`t work for **** in rca/ge tv`s, screen control is extremely fussy and must be set exactly or will do exactly what yours is doing, let us know, video-tek

HELP! Fire Hazzard!

It sounds like your focus/screen block, the flyback transformer, or maybe a CRT anode lead is leaking high voltage. This could be a serious problem, or could be a simple one. You should not attempt this repair unless you know all of the high voltage safety issues involved with this TV set. Good Luck
