Question about Dell Latitude D600 Notebook

1 Answer

Yeah so about 3 weeks ago, my Dell D600 which is running XP Professional SP3, 2gb ram, an internal bluetooth, and using a usb wireless adapter, started to freeze at completly spontanious times. Everything that it is has been running fine for several months than this started. It's extremly agitating. What are my options? Any help would be nice. Thanks. Chad

Hi Chad,

It sounds like it could be 1 of 2 issues either the memory or your hard drive may be failing.

Please do the following:

Turn on the computer. When the DELL logo appears, press immediately. If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again.

When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press .

Please choose the express test and post the results.

We will need to use a better test as the dell test may not be picking up on the issue.

If you currently have a memory stick please go to the following sitehttp://www.memtest.org/#downiso and download and install Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7). After this is placed on your memory stick you will need to reboot your laptop and press f12 to boot off of another drive. Choose your memory stick and it should start running a memory test. During a memory test you are going to need to look to see if there are any errors after a complete pass. It will need to run for a bit until pass goes from 0 to 1 after it goes to 1 you can stop the test by rebooting your laptop. If there are any errors on it then your laptop RAM is probably failing and would need to be replaced. If it passes this test I would lean towards the hard drive as the issue. If you would like we could also run a free software called the ibm/hitachi hard drive fitness test which can reliably tell us if the hard drive is failing. I look forward to your response on the memory test results.

If you are hearing a clicking sound I am 99% sure the hard drive is failing. Backup all information as soon as possible as you do not have long before the hard drive fails completely. It is frustrating that the dell test did not catch this.

Thanks to the experts in Fixya. I can now see the wireles in my school but can not connect to it because each time i try to connect it will write " WPA not supported by your wireless adapter, contact...

this usually means that your wireless network adapter is not compatible with WPA security. try updating your wireless driver and if that does not work, your option would be to purchase a wireless USB adapter that supports WPA. else, check with the network admin at your school for other options. hope this helps

I formated my Dell latitude D600 and installed windows vista. As a result, the wireless lan stopped working. I have tried running different drivers to re-instal the wireless yet it has refused to...

Dell does not provide Vista drivers for the D600 because it is too old.
(See: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&os=WW1&osl=en&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&catid=-1&impid=-1)

I see two options:
Purchase an add-on Vista-compatible wireless adapter (USB or PCMICIA).
Go back to XP. It will run better than Visa on the D600.

If this helps please vote for my solution.
