Will an electric motor with more horsepower and more rpm hurt a compressor pump?

Electric motors seem to turn around 1125 rpm or 3600 rpm. The pulley size on the motor and pump must be adjusted to achieve the desired result without overheating /loading the motor. I have seen pumps turning from 800 to 1200 rpm using different pulley size on motor, motor hp and motor rpm. Some brands will turn same pump from 1200 to 3600 rpm depending on if was electric or gas motor. This will certainly shorten the life of the pump but will most likely work. Most turn an average of 1200 rpm for good balance of long life and good supply of air. Pump rpm is usually limited to the power of the motor. Cost effective match of 1.5 hp motor will turn pump about 1000 - 1200 rpm for about 5cfm. Rol Air 2hp motor turns 2 cyl pump about 1100 rpm for 10 cfm. Good luck

One dealer for your model compressor is Northern. They are very good at replacement parts. If you do not have 3 phase power, you could shop around for 5 to 7 hp 220 v motor making sure that the motor mount will align with your plate. Pully size depends on dia. of pulley on the pump. Most pumps turn between 550 min to 1100 rpm depending on the power available and cfm requirements. Most motors turn at 1725 rpm so for example if your compressor has a 14 in. pulley then you motor will need a 5 in. pulley to turn it about 620 rpm. The larger the pulley at the motor the higher cfm produced but more amps used. Motor speed x pulley dia. divided by compressor pulley dia. To obtain more efficiency and highest cfm you will need 3 phase. Good place to see motors and two piece pulley combnations is www.grainger.com. Good luck

I need to find out what size belt for tine engagement on a Dayton 5hp Tiller model # 32885 C144B

a simple way to figure out the length is to engage the tine mechanism and take a string and wrap it around the pulleys mark it and take it to any belt store, and buy the Belt you need. You will need to know if it's a 3/8s or 1/2 inch drive belt. Normally tine belts are half inch or 5/8 wide on a 5 horse power motor, You can get these belts at sears or Nappa auto parts store. hope this helps.

How can i get more cfm out of a saylor beall 703 pump. The 705 look exactly the same to me but put out 3 times the cfm. I am guessing it is the same pump just bored out or maybe stroked with a bigger motor...

The 703 has bore sizes of 3 1/2 and 1 7/8 inch with a 3 1/2 inch stroke, the 705 has bore sizes of 4 1/2 and 2 1/8 inch and stroke of 3 1/2 inches. I am also sending you a link to the cut sheets for each pump. How they determine that a 705 is used for 3 H.P. is to turn the pump at 540 rpm and at 5 H.P. it is turning at 845 rpm. this all depends on motor rpm and motor pulley diameter to get the correct ratio of rpm and horse power at the pump.

You are looking for about 5 H.P. to do that, but what is more important is the r.p.m. of the motor, the size of the pulley,,, and the size of the compressor pulley! most manufactures will spec the pump for certain horse power,,, they go hand in hand,,, for example you cannot take a pump designed for 5 H.P. and hook a 10 H.P. motor and a bigger pulley on it and spin the pump faster to make more air,,, it wont take that high of speed,,, I hope this helps.

I have a engine on my sawbench which is rated at 3000 r.p,m thepulley on the output is 6 ins .what size pulley do i need on the saw to make it turn at 800 r.p.m.

The RPM's of the motor x the size of the pulley (3000rpm x 6inchs = 18000) = the output RPM's of the drive x the size of the pulley (in this case 800rpm x D ) Diameter would = 22.5 inchs.
Basically:
3000 X 6 / 800 = 22.5

You will have to change the pulley size on the motor to a smaller pulley. A 2" pulley on your motor would require a 7.5" pulley on your drive. Or you could use two belts to reduce the size of the pulleys even more. If you halve the RPMs to 1600 first from the 2" pulley you would need a 3.75" pulley followed by another belt hooked up to a 4" pulley to get your 800rpm. Hope this helps.

Motor pulley for an old Ingersoll Rand type 30 compressor

Hi,
Here is a link to Ingersoll-Rand (compressed air division) where you can find a local distributor. I think a call to a parts tech might provide the original motor sheave outside diameter and belt size (I'm suspecting "A" or "B" size).

http://www.ingersollrandproducts.com/contact/air/index.aspx

With that info, here is a link to a good industrial source for your new motor sheave (McMaster-Carr):

http://www.mcmaster.com/#v-belt-sheaves/=3fwz7b

Their prices aren't so bad.
You may also have a local industrial sales in your area.
I hope this helps you... Nice compressor!
