Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Laptop won't recognize full 320 Gigabytes of new PATA hard drive. It's always been running a 80 Gigabyte 4200 RPM but that drive is old...a 2005 HD. New WD320 only reads 137...

The BIOS in the ACER determines the maximum size of the hard drive it can support.
Check the laptop's specification to see the max size you can install in this model laptop.
It appears that the max size your laptop can support is 140 Gb (unformatted). 137Gb formatted.

I suggest you install a hard drive up to 140 Gb capacity in your laptop and place the 320 Gb hard drive in an USB hard drive adapter case and when you attach this hard drive to the USB port in your ACER laptop then you will be able to get the full 320 Gb capacity after you delete the partition and create a 320 Gb partition and format the hard drive.

I've replaced the hard drive with a 160gb drive but windows xp pro installer says it's only 131070 MB. On another computer it says it's 152625 MB. Do I need to update the BIOS?

no, when u install a partition on a hdd it will not show when u scan for disk size from windows as the partitions are seperated to keep it safe from many common issues. it looks like you may have installed windows again once it was in the new computer or just allocated additional space to the partition......dont worry, if your hdd gets full, windows will suggest to automatically slim down the partition for you

good luck and pls rate this post!!!!!! :D

I have a problem with my Local Disk C .

It sounds like you formatted the Utility Partition of the HDD and loaded the OS to that partition. Check disk Management, see if you have both a C: and D: listed for hard drives. If you do, that is the likely answer.
If disk management shows only 1 HDD and a lot of unpartitioned space, then you made a disk partitioning error and will need to remove and repartition the drive then reinstall

Acer 5520 restore failed 0xa000000e

I got it to work by deleting all the partitions on my drive (I first loaded xp, loaded system commander 9, and used that to delete all the partitions.)

Then while booting from the recovery cd, holding down alt-f10, the recovery dialog said it was partitioning the drive. (I didn't see this before, even if I partitioned the drive like it came from the factory.)

Then the rest of the recovery worked.

Problems with Acer Aspire 4315

Hi,

the backup partition, is used for system restore et,c.
You should really leave this intact.
Your options are, to purchase an additional external hard-drive.
Or to backup all drivers, used by the computer. Re-format the drive. setup the Vista software, if you have the Vista Software. Which is unlikely with a shop purchased computer.
you will then have the full sized partition, but no restore partition. Unless you use re-partitioning software after formatting the logical drive.

Hope this solves your dilema.

thankyou for using Fixya.

Restart after erasing hard drive

I think either you will have to make sure that your drive, your cd drive, is booting up,It should be f2
to boot your computer, it will give you a selection to boot from, your cd is the correct selection.,if no results, you must have deleted the backup partition or recovery partition when you erased the partition.Drive eraser would do that most likely.it writes over your drive so software is unrecoverable it is a security measure for valuable files not to be seen or stolen thanks kawuna

ORGINAL PARTITION DETAILS

When you say 80gb, then the correct disk capacity is 80gb that may be partition if you want (40x2, or 20x4 etc). When the disk(s) are ready, install operating system first and then the setup drivers.
