Generic problem for all CD Players

Philips Magnavox Mini Hi Fi System

My mom has an old ( about 15 yrs ) cd player that won't play cd's or open the turnstile. When you press cd, it says DEF. Does that mean default ? According to her manual, it means pause. We tried unplugging the unit, but that didn't help. The radio still works, and we think she might have just hit a wrong button or something. The manual says FW36, if that helps any.
