Wont go in gear when on it only goes in gear when car off


It's a manual transmission, then? If it is, your clutch is not working. You need to check at the transmission's bell housing to see if the clutch pedal being depressed causes the clutch fork to move-either forward or backward, it should move about an inch with the pedal pushed to the floor.. The clutch pedal will either be cable operated, or it will be a hydraulic clutch with a clutch master cylinder on the firewall, and a steel tube going down to the bell housing, where a small "slave cylinder" operates the clutch fork.

If you see the clutch fork move a fair amount, at least an inch, then you probably need a new clutch disc and pressure plate. A clutch job means removing the transmission to replace the clutch.

If the clutch fork does not move, either the cable has too much slack-for cable operated clutches, or the hydraulic unit has a problem-for hydraulic operated clutches. One of your hydraulic cylinders may be bad, either the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder.

2014 Service Manual says "Pour slightly more than 24 oz. (710 cc) Type 'E' HYDRAULIC FORK OIL directly into the fork tube." so you are going to need at least 48 oz for both.

You have to remve the intake ,valve covers,then loosen the rocker arms, remove the push rods, then reve the retainers for the lifter and then you can pull the lifter out . if you have never worked on an engine before i would recomend you not try to perform this repair.

My 2006 yamaha stratoliner has 16000 miles on it. It has never had the valves adjusted. How do I know if they need adjustment?


The valve clearance is automatically adjusted be the hydraulic valve lifter. However Yamaha say there are times when the valve clearance needs to be adjusted manually. Basically to balance a pair of valves if they become misaligned (pretty dam rare) as they are operated by the one lifter. (eg Inlet pair has one hydraulic lifter and the Exhaust pair has one hydraulic lifter)

The recommend service / checking interval is 20,000 kms. (12,000miles approx) according to the manual.

I have 15800 miles on my 2008 and after speaking with a Yamaha service technician, he hasn't had one in yet that has required adjusting when he has carried out the 20,000km service. Infact he has had to adjust one as of yet even at 40,000kms.

It is a bit of a pain to do, as a lot of stuff has to be removed and the covers are a little tricky to get off.

Me, I am not going to bother until 24,000miles, as long as you change the oil and filter every 5000 miles my Yamaha guy recon it will be OK.

If you are going to do it yourself, you will need a manual as only one value has an adjuster and the other is a slipper, so they are not as easy to adjust as a pair of standard valves.

How do you no if slavecylinder is any good


A clutch slave cylinder is a device used in the hydraulic clutch system, this item is mounted in the transmission, either on the outside, or in the inside.
If it is mounted on the outside, it is usually attached to the manual transmission by two bolts, the clutch slave cylinder has a rod that extends out every time hydraulic pressure is applied to it by the clutch master cylinder ( you operate this part every time you push on the clutch pedal). The rod that extends out makes contact with the clutch fork, in this design the clutch fork is the one who activates the clutch pressure plate.

In an internal clutch slave cylinder design, the clutch slave cylinder and clutch release bearing are one unit, this unit slides in the input shaft of the manual transmission and is held by two or three bolts that attach the unit to the front of the transmission ( inside the bellhousing). By being a single unit, the need of a clutch fork is eliminated.

What are the symptoms of a bad clutch slave cylinder?
Usually when you have a bad clutch slave cylinder you know it right away, because since it is a hydraulic part, once a seal inside the slave cylinder gets bad, it will start leaking fluid, at the same time, because the seal is not sealing properly, it will allow air inside the system, causing your clutch pedal to feel soft and spongy.
When a clutch pedal feels that way, it is an indication of air in the system, and when this happens, it makes it hard to operate the clutch properly because it engages even with your foot almost all the way to the floor, at times you may not even be able to place your car or truck in gear due to this problem.

NOTE: A bad clutch master cylinder will have similar symptoms, make sure that you look closely at each one of these items to determine which one is the problem ( the one malfunctioning is the one leaking fluid ).

How do I tell if I have a hyd. or solid lifter cam in my SBC and how do I tell the differance between the two lifters


If the engine is not apart, there isn't any real way to tell but if you remove a valve cover, on a solid lifter cam, when the engine is turned, there should be one time, when the lifter is on the heel of the cam lobe a bit past the time when the valve you are watching has closed, that you should have about 16 thousandths or more clearance between the rocker and the valve stem (called lash) A hydraulic lifter is always in contact with no gap.(though you may get a false reading if a lifter is bleeding down)
if the engine is apart enough to see the top of the lifters, a hydraulic lifter has a wire clip in the top that holds the hydraulic piston inside from popping out too far. A solid lifter does not have a clip because it dosen't need one (that's why it's solid)
Unfortunately, to know WHICH cam you have, you'd need to remove it as the manufacturer and grind numbers are usually stamped on the back end. (generally 16thousandths lash on intakes and 18 thousandths on exhaust will put you in the "ball-park" though).

2.2L Engine When installing new lifters, a pre-lube should always be applied to the lifter body. It is also a good idea to prime hydraulic lifters by submerging them in clean engine oil and depressing the plunger using an old pushrod. This allows the internal components of the hydraulic lifter to coat with oil before initial operation in the engine. All lifters should be replaced when a new camshaft is installed.
If any valve train components (lifters, pushrods, rocker arms) are to be reused, they must be tagged or arranged during removal to assure installation in their original locations.
  1. Remove the rocker arm cover.
  2. Remove the cylinder head assembly from the engine.
  3. Remove the bolts retaining the lifter anti-rotation brackets, then remove the brackets.
  4. Remove the hydraulic roller lifters from the bores.
  5. Inspect the lifter and lifter bore for wear and scuffing. Examine the roller for freedom of movement and/or flat spots on the roller surface.

To install:
If installing a new lifter, coat the lifter body with a suitable camshaft pre-lube
  1. Install each hydraulic lifter to its bore being careful to align the flat sides (top) of the lifters with the flat sides of the anti-rotation brackets. When properly installed the flat sides of each lifter are aligned parallel to the anti-rotation bracket. The roller at the bottom of the lifter is parallel to the camshaft lobe.
Make sure to properly align and install each lifter as improper installation of the lifters or brackets could result in engine damage.
  1. Install the anti-rotation bracket retaining bolts and tighten to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  2. Install the cylinder head.
  3. Install the rocker arm cover.

Fixing a clutch that suddenly stopped disengaging properly.


that is a hydraulic clutch and when they go out they dont always give warning. but it could be a leak in the line or just low on fluid and needs bled.
