Re: the buttons stopped working
Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

I've had this happen a couple of times in the last 6 months. You can get it to play again by chosing the format option from the settings menu. Of course, then you've lost everything you had loaded on to it. Download your music/audio books again and they will play.
That particular player is designed to work that way. Apple made one of their iPods in exactly that fashion, and other manufacturers' mp3 players quickly followed suit. You can pause it but you can't stop it. If you want to change songs, or the order in which they play, you can hit the "M" button and select songs/options from the menu of the RCA.
the same problem happened with my left control button. i couldnt turn back to the song. so i tried clicking the button several times turning the power on/off. eventually within about a week the button worked again. hope i helped in some way.
